I have a real pig of a problem with my dbox 2. It all started when I tried to flash commando onto it. After the box re-booted it froze at loading kernel. I have tried to use IFA to put another image onthe box. But I get nothing at all. I am using a Sagem with 2 chips. A Null Modem Cable and a Cross-over network cable. All I seem to be getting up on the screen is that it cannot locate the DBOX. I have followed a lot of guides including setting network to half duplex 10mbit. Disabled hyperthreading, ran a patch to disable media sensing. I am happy for any ideas people have, or if you live anywhere near junction 28 of the M1 and fancy having a play with it I will pay for your time.

Hi Bigdunc

I have tried a couple of versions of IFA, German and English. I'm not sure of version numbers but one of them came up with the Linux penguin screen, and he other one came with a similar screen but without the penguin.

From what I can tell the problem is with the network, although I have tried to run each version on three different PCs.

It goes through all the debug side of the connection (which I assume is through the null modem cable, then goes in a constant loop, which ends with "boot net failed" or "elfcopy 16 fail".

I am about ready to throw the thing out of the nearest window.

The Only thing that I have noticed, which may or may not be of any significance is that when set to 10mbit half-duplex non of my PCs detect the network cable as being connected.

Is there any way you can flash a DBOX without a network cable attached?

Thanks in adnvance
Rich

Are you sure you are using a crossover network cable for a direkt connection between box and pc.

Yep, I am 100% positive that it is a crossover cable, just to be sure that the cable wasn't at fault I have tried a further 3 cables, all with the same problem.

If you get boot net failed or elfcopy 16 failed something is blocking the network.
For instance elfcopy 16 failed is a typical sign for a enabled winxp firewall.
Disable winxp firewall, antivirus soft and so on.
You can get also elcopy failed if you use the wrong network cable.
You need a crossover network cable with crossed wires for a direct connection between pc and box. Your network cable from your cable modem is a 1:1 wired patch cable and not working.

Thank you all for your help. After pulling what little hair I have out for 3 days, I eventually took it to a mates house and it flashed on the first attempt.
Not too sure exactly why it woudn't work on any of my PCs as I even went as far as re-installing windows on one of them.
I am just thankful that it now has an image on the thing.
One thing that is puzzling me a little (which is the thing that landed me in this mess) after 20 or so of viewing, I start to get an annoying chirping noise from the TV, this then escalates to loosing the picture totally. The only thing which seems to solve it for a short period of time is performing a reset on the box. The problem then comes back after 20 or so minutes. This can get a tad annoying when trying to watch something a couple of hours long. Any Ideas?
