I am looking for some advice on my next step to take regarding a recent purchase of some supposed Verbatim DVD+R DL. I bought a 50 pack off of eBay to use to backup my 360 games, shipping was quick I left good feedback whatnot. About a week or two passed and I used up the last of my other pack of Verbatims, and I backed up a few games over the last few days. Last night I go to try them out before deleting the files off of my external HDD, and all the discs come up as unplayable when I put them in my 360. I find this odd, as in over 80 burns over the last year plus, I have neevr had a coaster. The I look and all the unplayable discs come from the Verbatim pack I ordered from eBay. Upon closer inspection, I come to find these discs are not real Verbatim. They look different, and have a glue in the center ring instead of the usual writing my other Verbatims have. I have over 200 Verbatims in my hosue from various projects, in all format types, and none are of this quality. I am assuming the seller bought somehting cheap and modified it, because they are dual layers, just not good quality. And its not my laser, because EVERY other backup I have works fine save these five. I just wanted your guys' opinion on my next move. I was going to take pictures of real vs. fake tonight, photoshop a highlight of the differences, email the seller, and just basically say look, I know these are fake, refund my money and we can callit a day, if not I will report you. That a good idea, or should i go straight to eBay/Paypal? I still have time to open both the claims, and I can go through Visa as well. Just thought maybe being straight with the guy might get me my money quicker. Anyhow, let me know what you guys think, I wan to do something by the end of the weekend. Also, anyone know a good brick and mortar to pick Verbatims up at? I used newegg.com up until this passed eBay situation, but I have some free time this weekend and wanted to get caught up on my backups. The Staples/Wal-Mart/Target/etc by me don't carry DLs at all. Thanks guys!

Yeah, Ebay has been know for that sort of thing. I have even seen them take PSP memory cards, they take a old non-working name brand one like Sony and replace the internals with cheap junk and sell them as Sony cards. then people get them and wonder why they will not work. I think your plan of attack is good, but i doubt a seller like that will refund you. You can always try though. If not report it through Ebay and Paypal or whatever you paid for them with. Another thing you can do is use a disc ID program. It will give you the actual disc ID which will tell you who the REAL maker of the discs are without question. This will give you even more evidence to go along with the pictures. I know Nero can do it and there are some free programs here, and it also has a list of disc ID's

And some other media stores are Newegg of course. Supermediastore.com and Meritline
Supermediastore.com guarantee's that their media is 100% authentic.

I was in you shoes way back when eBay was the only place to buy cheap dvd's (many years ago). There are many sellers on there selling fakes.

Start with getting the media code off of the disc. Use Imgburn, DVDDecrypter, DVD Info Pro, or something like that. Here's what the code should be:
http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia?dvdmed...h+or+List+Media

This will give you even more proof. Then contact the seller first, explain you know these are fakes, and you'll give him 24 hours to respond. Afterwards you'll report him to

- PayPal
- eBay
- F.B.I. Internet Crime Complaint Center http://www.ic3.gov/

see what he says and go from there.

Thanks a ton, both of you. The added resources helped a lot. I was actually shipped "Smartbuy" dual layers, which coincidentally rhymes with "garbage". I am preparing to email him, and giving him until noon tomorrow to respond. I will leave an update if I get anywhere with him. Thanks again!

hope all goes well. He will most likely not respond. People like that know exactly what they are doing, so it will not be some shock to his system. I am sure he already knows he sold you garbage and passed them off as Verbatim.

My advice is just pay the extra price and stick with retail stores that i listed above. As you ca see, cheaper is not always better. And never trust Ebay for DVD's.

and i know you may not want to say, and that is fine, but how much were the 200 discs? Because i know it costs me like $74 for 40 of them so i can't image what 200 would cost (well i can, about $370).

I definetely will from now on. I have always gone through newegg, and took a chance on these ones and got burned. Oh well, lesson learned, I second guessed myself right after I placed the order and rightly so. He actually responded and said "I have a Sam's Club receipt showing I boguht them there." Thats well and good, but I can go buy a 360 and get a receipt, and send you the case with turds in it and say "It's real, I have a receipt from Sam's Club." I called my credit card company and opened a claim, as well as reported it to Paypal and the FBI link that bhetrick provided. My CC company is sending me a box to ship them the leftover discs in, I forwarded them the links to the auction, my paypal receipts, etc. They said "if we find the product you were sold to be different from what you would receive through regular retail avenues after being represented as such" I will get my money back from them. So hopefully I will get a free pass on a poor mistake. Its a shame that sites like eBay are ruined in this fashion, such a good resource wasted.

yes, very true. You would like to be able to trust people to sell you what they say they are selling you. But unfortunately that is not the case some times.
I works out and he has to refund the money. That may tech him a lesson since he is out the money and the discs.

What was the seller's name if don't don't mind mentioning it? I saw someone selling 50 packs on ebay and thought the price was pretty low. Anyway the best deal you hope for is to have a Sams Club near you that sells them. They all don't carry DL Verbatims and only sell them in store. The ones that do sell 50 packs for $69.74. It's worth the membership just for that IMO.
