I know its probably here somewhere but I couldn't find it in search. All the info that came up was related to video and audio files.

I was wondering if I may use my DVD+Rs to back up files? I'm pretty sure I have read you can but if someone could tell me if this is advisable or not I would appreciate it. The files I would like to back up right now are the really important ones on my hard drive regarding business, etc. I know I should be backing this stuff up as I go but honestly I didnt know the best media to do so with so I have left in on the HD. So my question are:

1. Can I back up data to a DVD+R
2. Is this a good media to use for this.
3. Once I copy it to the DVD can I add files? I realize unless its a RW I cannot erase but wondering about the adding.
4. How the heck do you do this?

BTW I have been using the convertx program to do the movie files and it has been working very well. there are some issues but Im finding out a lot of stuff by searching this forum.

You can store data on a DVD, this is how the likes of DivX files are played on a DivX compatible DVD player.
To write the data requires a program like Nero (XP can write a CD, but not directly to a DVD).
Nero finalizes the (DVD+R) disk, so no further information can be added.

If the data you want to backup fits on one DVD then it's a good method.Once past the one disk limit it becomes a deferrable chore and it would be better written to another HD instead of multiple DVD's.

thanks, that sounds like a good start. I have Nero and my DVD/combo unit is fairly new (4 months old) so I should be good to give it a try.

The reason I asked was I have a lot of DVD+Rs and I figured why by CD+Rs when I have the DVDs. I will read up on DviX as I do not know what this is..I will follow the link you provided.

I guess I might as well ask, is it is just better to buy the CD+Rs? not from a process point of view I don't mind the extra steps but I guess strictly from a storage point of view. I mean being that they are 2 kinds of media DVDs and CDs both being sold/marketed for different usage is there really a difference in this context?

It depends on your storage requirements, CD versus DVD (700MB versus 4GB) and whether you believe that a CD will last longer than a DVD.
I leave that one to my betters.
