This is my first post here. I have tried to look for anwsers to my questions using search but I only got more confuced. So little help would be appreciated.
I bought a used PS2 console about 4 weeks ago (SCPH-30004R). I don't know if it is a V5 or V6 but if I understood correctly they are almost identical.
I also have a network adapter and 40gb Seagate Barracuda hard drive.
What I plan to do is this:
1. get mod chip (Matrix infinity)
2. install the hard drive and to use all programs from it
3. install NES and SNES emulators (perhaps others if there are any)
4. install a program wich is able to play *.AVI, Xvid, mpeg ect.
5. some other neat stuff if there are any
So basicly I'm trying to take everything out of my PS2 but I have absolutely no idea how to do it.
So what kinds of programs do I need and how do I use them?
I'm sorry if I posted this to wrong place.

Once you get Matrix familierizre yourself with it.
stuff like dev.1 and disable and all.
After that burn BIN/CUE Image in this.RAR file to a CD
This is uLaunchELF, The most important, universal Launching solution for PS2!!
This will allow you to transfer/backup/delete/copy saves and all possible files from your Memory cards (ps2/psx),USB devicec,HDD and CDFS! and also to launch ELF files. apart from that you can view .JPEG files. and a textviewer that opens all sorts of text based files.

Scroll down to the Launchers SECT and read all these tuts about UlaunchELF.
Also read the HDD sect and Emu sect if you are interested in that.
and then Get SMS media player.
to play various audio/Video files on ps2.
its there in the site I mention above, REGISTER THERE to get the latest version which has not been put up outside.

Thanks mate. It'll be week or two before I have mod chip installed. I´ll bet I have more guestion ect. then.

Well it took a bit longer than I expected but tomorrow I'll have a modded ps2 (Matrix chip).
I just thought that I'll report my progress and give you heads up.

I'm going fast to no where.
So... I've got modded ps2 (matrix), formatted HDD and some stuff.
I know how to change the boot device but how do I make the HDD bootable?

I used ulaunchelf to start HDloader from usb memeory stick. Not quite what I'm looking for but close.
What files and where do I need to get it to boot from hard drive?

I got the HDloader working (all I needed was in the Matrix team site). I'm also watching videos on my ps2 with SMS media player now.
Next mission! The emulators!

Oh, sorry I wasn't around the whole of yesterday but glad to know everything is fine. Yeah and nothing beats a bit of Retro-gaming!

That's true. Some Super Metroid and Super Mario Bros 3 every now and then keeps the doctor away.
I have some trouble gettin the SMS media player working from memory card.
I named it as "BOOT.ELF" and used ulaunchelf to get it on mem card1.
When I try to boot it perssing triangle during startup it's black for a moment and then goes to the ps2 normal browser.
When I use ulaunchelf and go to the mem card and use the "BOOT.ELF" it runs fine.
Can I make an iso of sms media player and launch it from hdloader?

Well it seems you are not really a nOOb anymore!
btw to be able to boot it from MC. you need to put it in
folder neamed BOOT (EG. MC0:BOOT/BOOT.ELF)

Ahhh! So that's how! I'll try that on SMS media player.
Really things got a lot easier when I realized (read some where) that elf files are like exe files in computers.
I have also set up ftp connection. Still have to find out few things about that.
Things are going nicely.

For some reason I can't boot from memory card.
I make a directory "BOOT" and place an elf-file there after naming it as "BOOT.ELF". I press triangle during boot and the screen is black for a moment and it goes to the ps2 browser.
I have tried to boot sms media player and snes station. Neither works.

What modchip do you have? are you sure you are supossed to press "triangle" only when you have to Dev.1? may be it is "L1" or something else. try UlaunchElf in there.

Right. I managed to brake HDloader somehow. It didn't copy anything and ultimately I had to format it again. Now I can't remember how I installed it in the first place.
I got lucky by the way. My Geforce 6800XT's (apg) fan kicked the bucket and the warranty was still on. I got me self a GF 7600GT as replacement!
My Chip is Matrix infinity. At their site triangle is for booting from mc and L1 is for HDD.
