I've kept the console in a vertical stance ever since my GoW disk got scratched while my cat sat on it while laying down horizontaly. It doesn't output as much heat as it used to yet I still think it's more safe if it was laying down, just because im afraid of tipping it over etc.

Any suggestions and personal experience with the diffrent positions :P?

have had mine horizontal since day one, no scratched discs or overheating problems. I do keep it propped up off the floor with a VCR cassette centered under the middle of it to help airflow.
