I have a backup of Halo 3 and when I play it on the 360 with the hard drive unit attached it plays the intro, the part where you have to look up and down and the movie of Master Chief holding the gun to Arbiters head. Then it goes to the loading screen and the screen (loads for ages ? the Halo screen saver thing) then it comes up saying your disc maybe dirty or damaged.
OK here?s the thing; if you remove the hard drive and play the game it works and loads quickly and perfectly! I have tried this on 2 different 360?s and the problems remains.
There is no point in playing if I can?t save my game. Any help out there?

as far as not being professional, well we do not get paid to be here answering question. We do it of our own free will to help the community.
I know many, many people with back up copies of Halo 3 who have had no problems with it loading with a hard drive on.
My only other suggestion that i can add other than the above is to go into you games on the hard drive and delete the Halo 3 file and try again. Possibly it was just a currupt save and that is causing it to lock up. But 95% of the time people get a dirty disc error it is due to a bad copy of the game that they burned, or a faulty DVD drive.
The game working without the hard drive is a bit perplexing indeed. But it is hard for people to give an answer when this problem has not been reported here by anyone else to my knowledge.
I don't have a BAD attitude... It's just Fact! I didn't mean to piss anyone off so sorry about that! But ya, what steimy said about deleting the File on the HDD, you may want to do that! Sometimes it's good to get rid of the cache on the system, and then try it again!

I will borrow an original Halo3 from a friend and try a backup of that first.
I did go into my hard drive memory but there is no Halo 3 save created yet, so nothing to delete. I guess it saves on the first level (once you start moving and shooting).
So far no other games have had this problem. The newest being ?The Darkness? & ?BioShock? which are working fine. How can you tell if my DVD drive is faulty or is starting to go (noises?)???
The game loading and playing quickly and perfectly without the hard drive attached is confounding to say the least! Could Microsoft have sent anything through Xbox Live in the past to cause this problem (last update I did was about a month ago and not been online since).
As I said Halo3 does not seem to have made a cache save file on my Hard Drive. Does anyone know when Halo3 makes its first save on the hard drive? When I do start the game the last checkpoint I can go to is the bit where the marine asks you to look up and down but there is no saved game data to be found on the hard drive?
i would say mostly you are only getting to the very beginning so it may not have a save point yet as there is no possible way for you to get killed yet. I forget when it was to be perfectly honest.
But trying it from an original is a great idea, that way you KNOW what kind of back up you are getting and can eliminate that as the cause. So here is what i would do if you have the right tools:
1. get an original
2. use the Samsung drive in the PC with XBC 2.6 (latest version) to make the back up. make a game folder somewhere to save it.
3. make sure to go to tools (i think that is what the tab is called) and click the "unlock drive" button before you start ripping
4. make sure all settings are correct then hit start and let it do it's thing and see if it goes all the way through without error or having to fill any sectors with zero's
5. now move the .DVD file from the game folder to your desktop
6. Get or open IMGburn and manually set the layer break:
tools-->settings-->write-->layer break. Check user specified and set it to 1913760. Click ok and burn as normal. This is only necessary the first time burning a 360 game
7. Now manually set the speed depending on the discs you use, like on a 6X max speed DVD+R DL i would set the burn speed to 4X.
8. Now hopefully your burner can do this, manually set the booktype in IMGburn to burn all DVD+R DL discs as DVD-Rom (my burner does that automatically)
9. Now select the ISO file that is left in the game folder (no not the DVD file like everyone else will tell you you need to do) and burn it to a GOOD QUALITY DVD (that is crucial)
If that does not work then there is a more serious problem. Unless you use low quality DVD's which can also cause all kinds of weird problems with backing up games. Make sure you also clear your cache as suggested before you start playing. This can also help.
Many people on the old Xbox who had problems with playing a game could solve it by simply clearing the cache.
OK I cleared the HDD cache by: Going to the system blade and then selecting memory, Press Y on the HD symbol and then press X,X,Left Bumper, Right Bumper, X,X. Once this was done a message appeared saying: Do you want to perform maintenance on your Xbox 360 storage devices? And I click yes.
Unfortunately the game still ran into same problem but it?s nice to know my 360 had a clean out.

i had a similar problem with dead rising, the same thing when it got to the point right after taking pics in the heli, it froze at the loading screen, i ended up having to reflash to original then back to extreme firmware, not sure if you do this but try that, i am not sure if it was coincidence or what but it worked.
