this is my 2nd xbox to get the 3 red lights of death. now the first one i did the towel trick on and it worked the first couple of times and then just broke permently. this next one i am going to attemp the heat gun trick and new thermal compound. now my question is do i have to put the box all the way back together again or can i keep the board out of the case and run a fan directly on it during play so it will not overheat again? is so has anyone tried this and did it end up working?

i also forgot to ask if i can put the thermal compound on and then just leave the heatsinks off (and still use a fan directly above so as not to overheat?)

can you not just send it for repair? Why keep fixing them yourself, which rarely ever solves it unless you do the heatsink and x-clamp, when you can have it fixed for free.

it is what often causes the RROD problem you have.

hope that is helpful. But that is one of the ways to fix the problem for good. The towel trick is just a rig job and i have never really heard of anyone i know that did this having any lasting results.

I was able to fix to of my RROD using this method. My buddy is using one, my brother has the other. Both have been working fine (one for 5 months, the other for 3). Fingers crossed I don't have to do it a third time, but if you are comfortable openning up your system and flashing it, this shouldn't be too hard for you. If you take your time and follow the guide steimy posted it is a breeze.

First of all the answer is no...HELL NO. Without the heatsink no matter where the fans are that thing is gonna overheat.

Secondly if you asking a question like that should you really be attempting that kind of fix?

probally not but i dont have anyone else that can do it to ask. the only person thats left is me. i dont like it anymore than you do. im not even the one who flashed the thing. the person who did it originally for me dropped off the face of the planet so if i cant fix this one and have to buy a new one im screwed.
