You need a codec like DivX or XviD.
Get a program called GSpot to see what codec your file is and download the right one. Or you can download K-Lite codec Pack which has them almost all.
Do you mean you are trying to stream video instead of downloading then playing? In either case it still sounds like you have a bad or missing codec. #afonic's advice is spot on.

Try enabling the codec option in Media Plyers options r.bugy. You can set it to download weekly, monthly or something like that. Media player should then download the correct codec for the files you are watching.
If this doesn't work, then download the K-Lite codec pack which #afonic first said.
