Is it safe to just plug in a HDD and not mount it during use?

I have no room in my computer for my PS2 HDD (My HDD cage only allows for 2 and is full). I have read on other guides to unhook a CD/DVD Rom Drive and plug your PS2 HDD in there.

That is fine with me, but I'm not sure if it is safe to just plug in my PS2 HDD and leave it in a tilted/not flat position while I write PS2 Games to it.

Should I just pull my slave HDD out and put the PS2 HDD there or will it be safe to replace my CD Rom drive with a tilted HDD?

P.S. My computer lays sideways, so it isn't standing upright

Just pull the slave cd rom drive out, and install the ps2 hard drive and set the ps2 hard drive to slave.

1. So you are telling me to replace the CD Rom Drive with my PS2 HDD.

2. Are you sure I have to set the PS2 HDD to slave, can't I leave it on cable select?

3. What should the HDD be set to in the computer? and in the PS2?

Set the ps2 hard drive to the same setting as the drive you are taking out of you're pc. When you use the hard drive in the PS2, I think you set it to cable select or master, or sometimes no jumper at all.
