UMD Laser Faulty - Update Capable?

If a PSP which is running 1.5 OFW has a damaged laser which cannot read UMDs, is it still capable of launching CFW setups? By this I mean 1.5 -> 3.52m33 -> 3.52 m33-4 -> 3.71 m33 -> 3.71 m33-2. I'm currently confused. U only need a UMD for launching homebrew and ISO/CSO games, right? Or do u need it for updates as well?

well, i'm not sure if you need umd to upgrade to cfw but if you upgrade to 3.52m33-x or 3.71m33-2 then you can enable no umd mode.when you do a successful upgrade to 3.52m33-x or 3.71m33-2 then i'll tell you how to enable no umd mode.
