US Wii Shop in Europe?

i'm staying with a friend in Germany that has a US version Wii.

Because he has AOL DSL, we have to use a proxy server (proxyi) to enable the wii to use one of the other computer's connections to the internet (we can't figure out a way to log in to the connection directly from the Wii through the router).

We can get it online using the proxy, but cannot access the Wii Shop Channel to purchase games.

Nintendo USA said this was because the shop was region encoded, and since we are using a US version Wii, I assume it is checking our IP address and not allowing us to connect.

Anybody got any ideas on how we can connect to the US Wii shop from outside the US?

It's possible (i guess) that AOL connection is somehow blocking our access to the Wii shop, but all other channels work properly, so I don't think that's it.
