If you decide to downgrade and use custom firmware read the readme that comes with it carefully. Many bricks can be avoided this way. Good point about the battery; charge it only when it absolutely needs it and most importantly of all, have fun with it!

If your the type that likes to tinker with things I would suggest buying an extra official PSP Battery and an extra memory Stick 512MB is perfect and make a Pandora Battery + Magic memory Stick.

You will need to get your FAT PSP downgraded to 1.50 or custom firmware first before you can make the battery.

Then your good to go with the tinkering. Believe me I have unbricked my PSP numerous times from tinkering. :-)

More on the Pandora battery HERE.

If you like tinkering with the XMB with custom themes make sure you backup your flash0

What does firmware mean and why does one dowgrade it?, it it had to be done, then why isn't it factory installed rather than goto another procedure to do so?..sorry if my questions seem too basic, coz m just a beginner and need to go through scratch.

Firmware (System Software) is the Operating System of the PSP. Like XP or Vista are Operating systems for PC's.

The reason you need to downgrade to 1.50 firmware is because 1.50 firmware allows unsigned code that is not officially signed by Sony to run on the PSP. So homebrew and custom firmware updates etc. etc. need this to run because they are not Sony official applications.

Sony added security to the 2.00 firmware and above so applications needed to be signed to run. But like most everything else there where exploits found in the security, that allowed programmers like (Dark_Alex) to develop downgraders so we could downgrade back to 1.50. This allowing us to run unsigned code applications again.

At the beginning most users used exploits like HEN or UMD Emulators etc. etc. to run homebrew/PSP games from memory Stick etc. etc. This was a great advancement but you would need to load the exploit to use the applications you wanted to use.

Then along came custom firmware (Developed by Dark_Alex). Custom firmware is just a modified version of Sony official firmware. It allows you to do everything that the official firmware does plus more. It allows you to do the same stuff as you would with a exploit like HEN but without loading the exploit. It also allows you to run homebrew applications that require 1.50 kernel or 2.XX or higher kernel.

Lets just say the devilment of custom firmware KICKED A$$.

The reason the custom firmware doesn't come factory installed is because it isn't official Sony firmware.

lol CFW factory installed? Well there is a reason why it's called 'custom' firmware. I wish :P

anyway, to add to the do's and don'ts, don't pry your UMD apart and try to run the UMD without it's white protective casing :P

Thanks for the explanation :).. the other thing I m not kinda totally convinced with is why do we have other versions of Firmware apart from 1.50, like the other versions I suppose they exist (can't list 'em out but have read it on A.D (AfterDawn).

The newest CFW is 3.71M33-2, of course it has more bug fixes, but there is some people said that 3.71M33-2 is unstable CFW so they prefer the 3.52M33.

I use this 3.71M33-2 myself and nothing weird happen, it's a stable version (it's my opinion, dunno is there is someone experienced a problem with 3.71M33 :P).

My Phat PSP History : 1.50 > 3.40 OE-A > 3.52 M33-4 > 3.71 M33-2 (semi-bricked) > 1.50 (Recovered) > 3.40 OE-A > 3.52 M33-4 > 3.71 M33-4 > 3.80 M33-2 > 3.80 M33-5 > 3.90 M33-2 + 1.50 Subset.

3.52 M33-4 and 3.71 M33-2 + 1.50 Add ON-2 are both pretty stable firmwares.

The difference is 3.52 M33-4 is more compatible with the plugins and other stuff out there.

Allot of the plugins, Custom Themes, and other homebrew are being ported to 3.71 M33-2 + 1.50 ADD ON-2 so things are looking up for the new CFW version.

yeah i sorta agree. not with the firmware itself, but installing 3.71 m33 is very annoying if you do not have daxs new unbricker. u need to go to 3.52 M33 > 3.52 M33-4 > 3.71 M33 > 3.71 M33 (with 150 kernel) > then 3.71 M33-2... it annoys me a lot so i really havent messed around with my firmware because im too lazy to go all the way back.

Oh, that doesn't bother me at all, in all honesty i kinda LIKE switching firmwares...
Anyway, the reason i say 3.52 M33-4 is still best is because of compatability with homebrew, PRXs and themes.
