How to Mod the Cut Leg Wii??

Alright. I've been searching all over this site for most of last night and sure I've found several threads that reference the D2B chip with the 3 cut legs off the chip. But, I haven't been able to find anything that states specifically what needs to be done to get a Wiikey installed. There are some mention of "the dremel method" with no specifics as to what that actually means. I also have a D2A version which I did the Wiikey install on with no problems. So I just need to get some specific direction on how solder to or make the connection with the 3 legs that are cut from the chip.

Yes. I know its hard to see in the picture, but I did confirm it last night as I still have the Wii open with the drive out.

The only thing you need to do different with the D2b board is that you need to rebuild the cut legs and the connections are the same

Thats GREAT!! Exactly what I was looking for. I'll have to give that a shot. Need to get a dremel though as I don't have one. But thats for the link.
Now if I already have the wiikey solder to the board, do I take the time to remove it and then just attach the wires to the chip? If so, what do you use to remove solder from a connection?

If you havent made any unnecessary connections the need to remove the chip isn't totally necessary, if you can work around it then don't worry. But I haven't myself removed a chip so im unsure of the steps and precautions to take when doing it.

DUDE!! Seriously... how in the HELL were you able to solder those wires onto the D2B chip legs? I did the dremel part, that was easy enough, just took my time and watched the progress after each time I touched the grinder to the plastic. But those chip legs are so damn small and there's so little space between them I have no idea how you're able to get a piece of wire and an iron in there to make the connection. anybody got a technique on how to solder these 3 legs?

you need a magnifier 20x do not use a grinder if you can't , you wil trash you chip set for good , no where you can get one like that chipset...hope it help i just used a piece of wire and solder iron and 20x magnifier to mod it and it working ok

I already did the grinding part on the chip set. That was no problem at all. I just really took my time and that came out fine. I definitely need a magnifying something because I just can't see well enough to do that. I do have a fine tip iron, but i think something to see better would be a big help.

I just successfully modded a d2b chipset with cut legs. I used the Wiikey. I did as much research as i could but once i opened the wii, I realized I was in over my head. If i can recommend anything, it would be to not attempt this without the correct equiptment. The essentials are a dremmel with a small cutting wheel, magnifying light, tweezers, 15 watt soldering iron, copper braid, flux and some scissors. I tried this install with a 45watt and a 40 watt soldering iron and they are just too hot, you will get one wire soldered and when you go to solder the next, it will desolder the one you just did. Radio shack sells pretty a 15 watt iron for $8. When you go to put the wire on the chipset, I had to put the solder on the wire itself and not on the chipset. the chipset is too small and easy to mess up. So get the smalles ammount of solder on the tip of a wire. I mean a tiny bit. Solder likes to ball up, so if you need to you can cut the solder off with scissors or acutally wipe it on the iron to remove a little bit at a time. Evenetually you will get the hang of it. Soldering to the wiikey is easy. I hope these tips are helpful. I wish someone would have explained this stuff to me, would have saved me a day or 2. Good luck modding.

Just a note, use electrical tape! Put electrical tape around everything you don't want to solder or cut. The only thing you want to see is what your about to solder or cut.
You can also get a helping hand at radio shack for around 8 bucks
with the magnifying glass and holders. Nice to have lying around anyways!

Hey just a quick possibly dumb question but what does a cut leg wii chip look like, as ive opened mine and not sure. Also is it bad that when i put it back together, I plugged it back in, the red power light came on, then when i press power it goes green then quickly to there being no light, eeek.

cheers, I know this now as i put my wlip on (not cut) it didn't work, took it off and wow....it still did not work, I know my legs are cut now looking from the diagrams provided but my main problem now is a broken wii, any help anyone.
Basically i put teh power cable in, the red light comes on on the front, i press power, it goes green for a second and turns off. Reinserting teh power cable makes no difference and it just does it again. Surely I haven't broken it too bad, I followed the wlip demonstration to the book. Could it be that i put the not cut wlip on and powered it up? but surely taking it off would rectify the problem.
Help much appreciated

thanks for the quick reply. I didn't use solder as I used the wlip, I thought it might be shorting out, that's my worry but all i have done is put the wlip on (wrong one might i add) and taken it off

i got impatient, did my cut leg wii grinding with the tip of a steak knife! one suggestion i have is that you get yourself a two part epoxy (i used a lepage one) and once you confirm the connections are good, and that all is well, put a blob of epoxy over your connections, that way they will never move or get bumped off those tiny traces
as far as wii not working, double check your two drive ribbon connections, they can look fully seated when they arent. I dont think putting the wrong wlip on/putting the wlip on wrong would mess up the wii.. it would be more likely to only mess up the modchip (pwr and gnd getting mixed up) but there is the remote chance shorted something and irreversibly damaged the drive. I reccomend double and triple checking those ribbon connections though.

thanks i have fixed it now, seems i had bent two pins on the white ribbon cable connector, as you can surely imagine i had a good 30 or so minutes appointment with a needle and a squinted eye trying to see to fix it. Finally straightened it up again and wii works great :)

Hi,
did you have to reconnect the cut leg or the wii clip took care of that for you? I am thinking about getting something that won't require to re-connect those leg, TIA.
