So as I never really played the Wii prior to installing the wiikey I am wondering how warm it gets or is supposed to get...the disc doesn't seem to get warm but the system definitely does. I was wondering if anyone out there has purchased a cooling fan or a cooling station and found it of use or if they're useless and not really good for what they're meant to be.
Personally i was about to buy one because sometimes my wii would turn off after playing a few hours and i didn't know why, then i found out that standby mode heats it up, fast too. Also i fiddled with the fan and i'm not sure if it wasn't working prior but it started goin and now it doesn't get any hotter than a little warm after countless hours of play. Definitely not necessary unless your fan has kacked it.
Well by fiddles i mean grabbed a toothpick and stuck it inside the fan to see if it was working and it didn't look/feel like it was moving until i moved it a little with the toothpick. Im not sure if it was working before or not but when i touched the fan and moved it a little it started up and now no probs.
haha nice, ok I'll have to check that out then...another question about the system overheating ( I couldn't find this anywhere) do you know the default dvd speed of the Wii pre wiikey? Also what is it post wiikey? ( I haven't gotten the config disc to work with 3.0U I just got a modded version of 1.2 that I'm gonna try out but so I have been unable to change it from 3x to 6x so I am trying to figure out what speed I'm running in default) will the dvd read speed generate heat?
At the moment if you have firmware 3.0 you need to flash your wiikey to 1.9b and use the 1.3 config disc for it to work. deafult speed? 6x with the wiikey installed, i played mysims and never touched my settings, i went into config and changed it to 3x and the wii is quiter and also takes a bit longer to load.
Yeah I have 3.0US and flashed the wiikey with 1.9b but could not get the wii to read the 1.3 config disc ALOT of people were saying that it was because I had 3.0US prior to installing the wiikey.
http://www.demonoid.com/files/details/13...page=3#comments But I've burned Res Evil 4 wii edition and it runs fine (as you don't have to configure anything for the burned games) I was just wanting to drop the dvd read speed to 3x cause I wasn't sure what the default wii (pre wiikey) dvd speed was, some people say its 8 some say its 6, but because of this I just want to keep it under control lol...I imagine a game with more cut scenes you'd want to run the drive a little faster so the clips arent choppy but still. Just trying to do all the small stuff now so I don't have to worry about potentially big problems later
Yeh definitely, well i put my speed down because i don't want to kill my laser faster or cause potential problems with it, as far as i know the default speed that i was on, maybe it was done by the modders when they activate region override because when you go into configuration it doesnt go to the current settings on your wii it just has a bunch of options then your able to flash the changes onto your wii, and the default speed on the config menu is 6x so they may have changed it to 6x when they configured my wii not knowing/caring.... if that made any sense at all
Yeah that makes sense, from pics that I saw of the config screen too I figured it was defaulted at 6, I was hoping though that the default of the wii pre wiikey was at least faster lol, but oh well It probably wasn't, I'll be able to check out my config disc tom when i get back to where my wii is currently at to see if the modded 1.2 will work so I can drop the speed back down. I wish there were more options for disc speed though...oh well beggars cant be choosers i guess. Thanks again
So after some more quick research the majority of information seems to be pushing that the Wii default read speed (pre wiikey and in turn pre chip) is actually 6x(not 100% confirmed), so I don't think that keeping it at 6x will hurt the drive/laser (I'm still gonna swap it to 3 once I get config disc up) That being said something that was mentioned and I believe could contribute to extra heat up is the quality of the dvd in terms of stiffness of the dvd used to run the game. It is purported that official wii games run on a stiffer disc so there is no wobbling, i.e. the reader runs optimally. However a lot of blank dvd media is not so stiff which causes wobbling of the disc and in turn could cause the system to run hotter. I am just trying to put two and two together when I say it could run hotter. But for people out there who are running hot systems this could be a reason why, not to mention the noise of the drive itself.
