Well last night I decided to rip open the Wii and install a WiiKey.
After opening up the Wii I found out that I have the D2B chip with three missing legs. All of the pads were intact.
Some careful dremmeling, soldering and double checking and the WiiKey is installed.
After the install, I popped in the 1.3 USA Config Disc. The Wii Menu came up and the GameCube DVD appeared. I launched it and came to the WiiKey config menu. I was able to navigate the menu by using the reset button on the Wii.
Here's my question, is my install good? If my install was bad would I be able to launch that WiiKey Config Disc?
What should be next steps? Backup WiiSports and try that before reassembling the Wii?
Is there a need to upgrade the WiiKey first? Should I update the Wii's firmware first?
Prior to any updating of the WiiKey or my NTSC-U Wii, what backup can I try that will not prompt for an update?
Correct me if I'm wrong but this is what I gather from looking over various threads. I should upgrade the Wii's firmware via the Internet to the latest version. By doing this, no game can update my firmware because I already have the latest version, correct?
I do understand that if I want to play an out of region game, I should BrickBlock and RegionFrii it right?
all updates from your own region are confirmed harmless at the time of this post. There are some precautions that you can take if your not sure.
Never run an update from a game that is not from your region of wii.
Always do the updates over the wifi connenction on your wii instead of relying on game discs. Sometimes there will be some updates on game discs that don't come down through the wifi, for example the update on Metroid Corruption. As long as the game is from the same region as your wii then the update is okay.
There may be some future updates that cause problems through the wifi connection or on a game disc but right now you have nothing to worry about.
Hey pop in the 1.9b flash for the wiikey
That should be read...alot of people have been having issues with a pre wiikey 3.0U firmware on the wii...but drop in 1.9b flash the wiikey and then play some burned games you should be good. there is a modded 1.2 config disc floating around that is supposed to overcome this issue, the link is in the cooling station/fan thread I haven't been able to try it but I will be doing it tonight so ill let you know how it works but everyone who has tried it says it works hope that helps.
