i just purchased a xbox 360 that has been modified to play backups of my friend. He doesnt know how it is modified either. Is thaere anyway of me finding out if its been flashed or there is a chip in it, Preferably without having to open it up.

without opening it, No.

95% of the people i have seen flash the drive as it is the easiest and most up to date method. So there is a very good chance it is flashed. Really something you should have asked when you bought it.

I thought NME chips only play NME converted games and regular ixtreme or plain xtreme game would work. I guess that could be a way to check. I'm not sure on any other chips out there, but NME seems to be most popular for those who use them. I agree with Steimy that's it probably flashed.
