First off, I just got a 360 from a pawn shop for dirt cheap. It works in HD, isn't banned from Live... I have no idea why it was there. I just played for several hours without any trouble...

ANYwho, I definetly need to mod it. I live in a college dorm where all my stuff is treated like crap. I've read through the tutorial and have one question. I've found out my drive is a Hitachi drive, but I haven't taken it out to look at it yet. In the FAQ, there is mention of a laptop SATA card that I can get. Would that work with my laptop, or does it very from mobo to mobo, and does that SATA work with the Hitachi?

Also, I was trying to look up if I have bitsetting on my lappys DVD burner, but since it's a laptop, it pretty much just says DVD RW and whatnot. Is there some way I can check to see if I have it through windows?

Third, I understand that homebrew still doesn't run through modded 360's. So I'm assuming even the old regular Xbox brew doesn't work? And does that also mean that still the only way to stream videos encoded with DivX is through that TV program?

And last, is there any other sort of cool modded-underground type stuff you can do with the 360 that I should try? Like the video streaming?

Thanks guys and gals, and sorry for all the questions...

Sorry, one more question, actually...

When you send your 360 in for repair, do they ask for a receipt or anything?

I got a flashing red light when trying to turn it on this morning... but unplugged the power, plugged it back in... and now it works... played about an hour and it still works... that ever happened to anyone else?

Anyways, what I'm wondering is if my 360 breaks, if I can still get Microsoft to repair it even though I bought it from a pawn shop...

You can buy a USB kit called "Xecutor 360 connectivity kit V2" or similar. In the UK it is about £19.99 and I have used it to flash two Hitachi's using XP and Vista from a Dell laptop. Dead easy! Before you open the case, just check this database out as your serial number etc on the back of the console or better the box sticker can give a clue as to what Hitachi drive you have. If it is old then it should be ok to flash. I use GaryOpa's files.

Secondly, I have burned 360 games with any burner that I have tried, including two standard laptop DVDs. However, my preference is for Pioneers and I have one in a USB external enclosure also for use with laptops. The main thing is make sure you have upgraded the firmware on your laptop and use the latest Schtrom ripping software and imgburn to burn it. Oh and using decent DVDs like Verbatim. I have never had a coaster - never!

I don't know about your other questions - good luck!

Flashing lights can indicate all kinds of problems. One of them is simply to do with not detecting the AV lead so maybe your was a bit loose the first time and then ok after you rebooted!

Thanks guys... still a little confused though...

First, how does that list help me figure out what kind of DVD drive I have? Will I just have to bite the bullet and open it up to find out?

And secondly, I'm confused by the team Executer thing... I started looking into it, and it seems simple enough... but where does it plug into the Xbox where it doesn't need to be opened?

Also, does anyone know of a good legitimate place to buy the Team Xecuter thing, if that's really what I need?

Sorry to bump, but if that Executer is all I need, I'd like to order it soon! I still don't get how it connects to the Xbox though, and what kind of DVD drive I need! Any help?

If you are set on flashing the drive, you are going to have to open the Xbox anyway, so you may as well do that now to determine your drive and firmware version. get on xbox-scene.com and download the tutorial by a guy named "textbook" and it should have everything you need in there.

I am on a desktop and got the "recommended, tried and true" hardware (VIA SATA card, Pioneer DVD-writer, and a Kreon drive for ripping) so I can't say too much about the lapper situation you are in. I know you are going either need to continue to pull your DVD out of your xbox and hook it to your PC to rip backups if you don't get a Kreon drive -- no idea if a Kreon can go USB or not.)

The Xbox DVD will hook to the PC via SATA (from the PC) and will continue to use the Xbox for power... I'd type more but Textbook did such a good job with his info there isn't a point until you get further into it.

Yes m8 it can. I have been using one in an external USB 2.0 box for a year or so - 100% working games!
