Ok. This is weird, to me at least. If I start up my PC from scratch, it will not run any programs that require the internet, i.e. Firefox, IE, Napster, Pokerstars, etc. But if I simply restart it or log off and log back in, they run just fine.

I ran a test where I logged off and back in and it worked. Immediately after, I restarted it and it worked. Immediately after, I shut it down completely and it DIDN'T work. So I would conclude that shut down is the problem, but that's where my knowledge ends... lol. Please help.

I am running on XP. And just for shits and giggles I did disable my firewall and that didn't help.

Thanx ahead of time for any and all help.

I don't know what he was trying to tell you...

Anyway, shutting down the computer, then starting it back up as soon as it turns off? How about a reboot without selecting reboot, just pressing the reset button on your computer?

Well, my guess is that if they're working if you reboot with the button, then the problem might be in the actual shutdown process of Windows (which I think differs from the restart process).

I had a similar thought. I thought maybe when I shut it down at night, since I exit Firefox and then shut it down real quick, maybe I wasn't allowing Firefox to close properly. BUT, then I figured Windows would alert me if it had to close a program all of a sudden. And also, how would that explain why other programs I don't normally use are doing the same thing.

I will try it though and let you know. Thanx.

OK. I did these two things. First I just pressed the power button once. It shut down as usual and I had to boot it myself, no automatic restart. The internet programs worked just fine. I then did a hard boot(held the power button for like 3 seconds and it shut off immediately, no log off or saving of settings. Upon booting up I tried the internet programs and NO DICE. Just for giggles again, I logged off and logged back in and it worked just fine.

This is getting annoying. I'm tempted to just restore, but it's such a pain! PLEASE HELP!

Update: So I tried another thing. I created a guest account. The guest account was working fine for a couple tries, but now they both have the same problem. But now the main account doesn't seem to work upon restart or log off any more. So I will go back to one account with no password.

My new question is this... what one thing do all internet programs have in common?

The only thing I can think of is that that one thing is going coocoo and is not letting anything communicate with the internet programs. I have a laptop that connects wirelessly and that is having NO problems, so I assume it has nothing to do with the router or modem.

Yeah, I was thinking it might be the router, but if the laptop can connect fine...

When you say that your PC "won't run" these programs, what do you mean by that? Is it just that nothing happens? Or do you get an error of some sort?

Pokerstars starts but says there was an error, unable to connect to server.

Napster's user interface shows but will not connect to the server.

Internet Explorer's window comes up, but the page is blank and the bottom status bar stays stuck on the "Page found. Waiting for response." message.

Firefox at first will show the title bar at the top and goes no where. If I close it and hit the DO NOT SEND button on the error window that comes up. I will try and restart it again and the second time, it wont even show the title bar. When I've done it with the Task Manager open, I see it running at like 25,000k, but it doesn't do anything.

UPDATE: So, I was tired of my Internet Security program blocking stuff and warning of pages because of the parental controls and some utility that verifies websites for you. So I decided to uninstall them, and wouldn't you know it, the programs "SEEM" to be working. I restarted, no problem. I shut down, rebooted, and no problem. So I guess it was not the firewall specifically but it was the Internet Security thing.

CA - Computer Associates. I love it, but there are just too many features for my taste. The only reason I have it is cause it came with a laptop I bought and I liked it enough to renew the subscription. They hooked me! BASTARDS!!! LOL
