I need some help assistance on how to completely remove Symantec Antivirus off my pc. I'm running windows xp professional.
Have gone to add/remove programs but it stop half way, I get error message "fatal error during instillation"
I have even tried by inserting cd-rom where it gives me 3 options,
remove, modify, repair but same error message.

To DDP,

Tks for your assistance, however I can't quite use this since it tells me I must first remove Norton from add/remove programs before Norton removal tool can proceed.
This s what I've tried more than several times but it keeps giving me that fatal error message so not sure what to do, maybe I try what was posted by other person "RichieTD".

use ccleaner from this link http://www.filehippo.com/download/836aab...6b540/download/
goto tools, click on norton & then click on run uninstaller button near top right side. see if that works.

This is totally...............you know what......
I just installed ccleaner, for some freaking reason Norton can no longer be seen in add/remove popgrams nor in ccleaner.
I don't know what the hell is going on......
Tried to run "Norton removal tool" & it still says need to remove Norton from add/remove programs before it can continue.
FYI) I can still see 2 folders in my program files

Does this have something to do with registery?
If so not really?
Couple of years ago I had similar problem removing game & had to go to registery (many files/folders) to get it removed.
Is thsi what I'm suppose to do?

I believe I know what to do with "regedit" but not all the way.
Need to go to start-run-type regedit & gets me registery editor but after that not sure.

Thank you,

Try downloading RegSeeker from http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm
it's a freeware registry tool ...it's amazing actually helped me a lot in problems like urs.

1st run "Clean the registry"
if the problems insists try to search the registry for any Symantec key and remove it.(u have to b careful wat u r deleting)

btw It's virus and spyware free (i checked it using many virus any spyware scanners)

if you are unsure about playing around with the registry, your last option really is just to clean and install your whole hard drive.Make sure you back everything up 1st and then insert your windows disc and away you go

x 2 to skyrider, norton sucks which is why they make it so hard to remove the program so people give up trying to remove it and keep throwing their money away...its a tactic to get more money. Like skyrider said, backup what you need, and reinstall windows, if it asks for the norton disk just ctrl-alt-delete and exit the installer (or reboot). Then get a good av like avast, nod32, or avg. Good luck.

ubuntu!

What people arent aware of with nortons is that it allows the virus through and then alerts you and then quarrantines it.By that time depending on how servere the actions are from the virus , well it may already be to late.

There is another one out called vet which is quite good. I'm using that at the moment.

$30 doesnt seem that expensive for a years peace of mind
