I've seen this question a few times, and have had very little success in finding a "good" answer, so I've decided to do my own testing and found that the following things work to burn ISO's and MDF/MDS files.

1. Contrary to popular belief you don't need any extra software to burn either of these files.

2. For ISO files just mount the ISO image (it should mount just like a .dmg file)

3. In the FINDER go to the APPLICATIONS directory, and the to the UTILITIES folder.

4. Double Click on DISK UTILITY and you should see the mounted drive in the bottom left of the window.

5. Click on the new drive and just click "burn" in the upper left corner of the window. Congratulations, you've just burned a DVD.

For MDF/MDS files you just have to do the following.

1. Delete the MDS file (the small sized one) you don't need it.

2. Re-name the file to have an ISO extension and repeate above steps.

This worked for me several times on OS X 10.4.9 (I think). These things may vary depending on you OS X version.

I hope that this helps anyone that had any questions!!

Thanks

Or you could just use Toast Titanium like everybody else. It burns ISOs, BIN/CUEs, MDS/MDFs and even the crappy NRG format.

yeah, but you could also save $80 and just use the FREE utility that comes with the OS...maybe I should change the topic to include the word "How to burn for free"

None of these works for Pse image files...

what do you mean pse?? I've never worked with that file format before.

Also I am talking strictly PS2 ISO and MDF files, and not PSX image files.

ISO and MDF are both mountable by OS X as a disk image to burn.

Ok where to start... Well first of all, sorry for the typping mistake, I was talking about Ps2 not Pse :)

I've tried EVERYTHING for those god damn .mdf files. The odd thing is that everytime I want to burn a file thats bigger than 700Mo (so destinated to a DVD and not a CD), I have no problem burning the DVD and playing it in my Ps2. So all big files of no matter what type (.nrg, .iso, .mdf etc...) can all be normally burned with Toast.
For exemple, the last .mdf file I COULD burn weighted 2,2Go, and all I did was to manually change the .mdf to .iso.

But every damn time I want to burn a small game (that weights under 701Mo), changing the .mdf to .iso does not work.

I also tried the disk utility doesnt work. Also tried Toast, and by the way Toast wont just let me put a .mdf file into the burning window. Changing the extension to .iso will force Toast to accept it, but it still wont burn it.

Maybe someone here will be able to tell me WHY only small .mdf games CANT be burned with any of the options I mentionned. It seems to me that only Alcohol 120% PC users can burn these small .mdf/.mds Ps2 games.

The only thing that I can possible imagine, is that Alcohol 120% handles the ripping of CD's differently than that of DVD's.

You might also want to try going to http://forums.videohelp.com. I know that they are a video and dvd website, and not a game site, but they are very very helpful sometimes.

I did notice that all they said for mdf/mds files is to rename them as well. I wish you luck, I just can't figure out why it's doing that.

After over 2 weeks of trying and failing with every option there is, I found a way to burn a .mds file (and I really mean .mds cuz in that case you wont need the .mdf). Every damn convertion fails and even if you think you have a valid iso by converting a .mdf file, trust me, your Ps2 wont read the Cd!.
I never thought it would come to this, but the only way for a Mac user to burn these Ps2 games, is to install these two apps :

- Virtual Pc (version 7 works just fine and is pretty easy to "find")
- Alcohol 120% (I tried version 1.9.6.4719, and it works)
- and of course youhave to have something like Swap Magic or a chip with your Ps2 console, otherwise, goodluck!

I wont tell you where and how to find and use these 2 applications, but know that I did find everything I needed on the Internet and its the only way that it really works!

In the end, it doesn't use too much space on my computer! And after only one day, I can tell you that the installation "nightmare" is already far away. I even find the whole thing pretty easy to use!

Kim :)

Apparently I'm right behind you having the same issue... but I can't seem to get Virtual PC (or Alcohol 120%) to burn a dvd, only a CD. Any advice would be great. I'm running a Powerbook G4 with a Super Drive. Programs are the same as Kim's. The file I need to burn is .mdf and about 760MB. Obviously it's either VirtualPC or Alcohol 120% not recognizing the dvd burner.

So you did get to burn a cd with Alcohol 120% on Virtual Pc right?

Are you sure you picked the .MDS file and not the .MDF ? Cuz with Alcohol you dont need the .mdf file, only the .mds ...

Oh!! I just realized you were talking about a 760Mb file!

If you're sure that you picked the .MDS file, and tried to burn it at a really slow speed (1X is the best), and Alcohol still wont burn it, then try this :

Forget about Virtual Pc, just use your Mac (I hope you have Toast)
First, find your .MDF file and simply change the file name to "yourgame.iso"
Open Toast and go to the Copy tab and select "Image File" on the left panel
Drag your .iso file into the main window and burn at a really slow speed (1X or 2X)

That should work (if you have Swap Magic or a chip installed of course!)

For some very strange reason, burning a DVD with Toast works fine just by changing the extension to .iso. For cds, it only works with the VirtualPc/Alcohol method.

If all this doesn't work, tell me if your Ps2 TRIES to read the game or if you only get the main menu.

Good luck!

It's possible I just have a bad file... that didn't work ("wouldn't" work)
The .mds file I have is only 4 KB, the .mdf file I have is 768.9MB. If I rename the .mdf to .iso, I can move it into Toast (ver. Toast 8 Titanium 8.0). I when I hit burn I can select a burn speed of 2X, 4X or 8X... but that doesn't matter, I get an error "CD-ROM XA or Audio tracks cannot be written to a DVD"
Right now I can't burn anything with Alcohol 120% because it won't recognize my Superdrive... I'm still working on a solution.
If I "try" to burn the file to a CD, I get an error "Sense Key = Illegal request / Sense code = 0x26 / Invalid field in parameter" which I assume means the file is too large for a CD.
I'm really not familiar with Toast and this file is starting to really annoy me, ha...
Any other ideas? I appreciate the help.

One more thing:
When I move the file to Toast, under Copy Summary it says "gamename.iso" and under that it says " 'file size' ISO 9660 CD-ROM XA"
...if that helps

Kim, you said you WERE able to burn using Virtual PC? I found this release: "Virtual PC only supports the reading of data from CD-Rs, CD-RWs, DVDs, and DVD-ROMs. Virtual PC only emulates a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.
Virtual PC does not support burning CD-Rs, CD-RWs, DVDs, or DVD-ROMs in Microsoft Windows even if the host Macintosh PC has the appropriate hardware and software to do so. Virtual PC also does not support the use of Windows-based CD-ROM or DVD burning software."
Which I suppose explains why I can't burn with Alcohol 120% in VPC (all the same versions you listed). This file is beginning to annoy me. <sorry about the triple post>

Ok, Maybe, just MAYBE, I am able to burn with Alcohol on VPC BECAUSE I am using an external DVD drive (my Superdrive ate a CD and died last year!). But I doubt it! It doesn't make too much sense since what you are telling me, is that Virtual Pc should not be able to burn on any media whatsoever. I'm telling you I CAN BURN .MDS PS2 GAMES with VPC and ALCOHOL (and even with NERO on VPC)!!
Could you send me the link to that VPC information page?

Otherwise, while you were writing your last post, I was preparing something for you... here it is :

To see if VIRTUAL PC detects your superdrive :

When you insert a blank DVD in your mac and open Virtual Pc, the DVD should be captured automatically. If not, use the "dvd icon" that figures in the bottom of Virtual Pc. Click on that icon and select "Capture disk".

To see if ALCOHOL detects your superdrive :

NORMALLY you should be able to see that information when opening the application. In the bottom part of the main window, it tells you your Pc name and right under, it shows your superdrive information.

----

Just to make sure, here is te EXACT procedure with Alcohol (you might have to search a little for equivalent terms since I am using the french version! But I'll try my best to translate what I see):

- Open Virtual Pc
- Open Alcohol 120%
- On the left "drawer" choose "image burning wizard"
- A new window opens
- Select the MDS file (I know its a small file but thats the one to use!)
- Click "Next"
- Normally your Superdrive should appear on the upper part that new screen, if its not selected, then select it buy clicking the down-arrow. You can also click "Information" in that section to see a detailed information page about your CD/DVD device"
- Choose the writing speed (1X or 2X)
- In the middle part of that page, make sure that "Write" is cheked and not "Simulation"
- In the bottom "Datatype" , choose "Playstation 2"
-Then click start

Of course, you have to use a DVD since the game is too big to fit on a cd.

-----
If none of this works, could you tell me what game you are trying to burn exactly? I did get to burn 99% of the games I wanted, but that 1% might just be the the same game you are trying to burn! Sometimes it happens that people upload corrupted files. If you really want to make sure you have done everything correctly, try to follow the exact same procedure but with another . MDS game. At least that way you'd know where the problem is coming from!!

Ok I know where you found this :

Quote:
Virtual PC only supports the reading of data from CD-Rs, CD-RWs, DVDs, and DVD-ROMs.
Virtual PC also does not support the use of Windows-based CD-ROM or DVD burning software.
But that paragraph is incomplete
...

Damnit! I think I can burn with Alcohol BECAUSE I plug a usb CD/DVD device :(
So if you try what I said and it still doesn't work, unfortunately, I think you'll need to buy or borrow an external USB device ( I'm using Lacie). I know this is getting really complicated, but I read the manual and it kinda confirms that my external device gives me possibilities that Mac's native superdrive cant.

Page 7 , here : http://download.microsoft.com/download/7...CDeployment.pdf

Quote:
"Programs that users install on their virtual machines work the same way that they do on a
Windows-based computer, including business, education, Internet, and other programs. And most devices that users connect to their physical computers, such as printers, modems, CD-ROM drives, and so on, also work with their virtual machines"
But still, I dont understand WHY it could work that way and NOT if the devide is integrated in the computer.

Can anyone confirm this information please? Has any Mac user here tried burning with the native superdrive on Virtual Pc and succeed?

here's the link:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/824368

Alcohol won't recognize the drive as a burner at all... I assume you're right about yours being recognized because it's a USB drive.
...and I can't get Toast to accept the .mds file even if I rename it.
the game is just a star wars jedi starfighter game, really it's more of a battle now than an actual desire to play the game, you know what I mean. I just figured someone had dealt with this before and I bet I'll have to again and wanted to get the issue solved. Thanks for the help so far, hopefully this will get figured out.

Did you read my last post? euh I mean my second last post...
About the way to check if Virtual Pc or Alcohol detects your device...
Doesn't it give you any information about your superdrive?

Yeah, it doesn't matter what I do... VPC doesn't recognize the drive at all. Alcohol doesn't even allow me to use the drop down box to select a drive. If I get this burned, it'll have to be in Mac OS or barrow an external (or a PC with the right software).
