Help with Sony Vegas!

Please I need help with my Sony Vegas 6! My problem was that the program didn't play the video only the audio so I installed Virtualdub and saved as AVI. The files how so ever were too big like 30- 40 GB! So I compressed using Xvid MPEG-4 Codec. It didn't work- it compressed the file but the video couldn't be played. So I chose the Miscrosoft Video 1 codec and the video played but the file on the other hand was still too big. I tried installing other codecs like Huffyuv and Nic's but none of them appeared in the virtualdub compression- list.
I don't know what to do so please HELP ME!
