Fat ps2 laser work around. will it work?

I have a V7 PS2 that is modded with a matrix infinity green dot. I know it is not a clone because it worked for about two years with two firmware upgrades.

The problem now lies in the fact that i don't know if my chip went out or if my laser has gone bad. It still boots original PS2 games, original dvd's, and backup dvd's. But no longer boots backup ps2/1 games or original ps1 games. I can still access the bios, and the matrix logo shows with a fast boot and when i boot a original game with the playstation infinity v1.82.

So how do i know if it's the laser or the chip? What points could i check to see if they have gone bad?

Please give any helpful information. And thank you in advance.

Please any help would be useful. I want to repair it so i can use the HDD since my slimline is a v14 and can only use the shoddy usbextreme. Any sites that would be capable/willing to repair it please let me know.

Also since i have a matrix infinity chip in the fat console and i can still access the bios, could i put a memory card exploit on it and than boot from the memory card directly to the hard drive and just use the pc to load games and bypass the laser alltogether?

sorry for the double post i'm just really desperate as to what i should do.
