DIsk reading issues and broken DVD drive

Hi everybody,

I recently attempted to fix my Xbox 360 but have had a bunch of problems.

When I started, my xbox was having trouble reading lots of disks. Sometimes it would go to the dashboard and say "unreadable disk", or i'd put it in and it would attempt to read it and say "open tray" on the dashboard. Also, sometimes it would give the "put this disk in a an xbox 360" error. Also, sometimes it would work fine. But when it worked, sometimes it would freeze after an hour or two of play.

So my first question is: Does anyone know what this problem could be or how to fix it?

Here's how I tried to fix it. I opened the xbox and opened the dvd drive. I cleaned the lens, but I then attempted to take the lens/laser assembly off of the rail to look at it. I wanted to disconnect the flat cable that attaches to it, but I removed the white piece from the laser assembly, screwing up the connectors inside of it.

So my second question is: Would a new lens/laser assembly solve the problem that I had in the beginning?

And third, if I need a whole new drive, would it be possible for a person like me, with not a lot of computer ability (although I'm a smart kid and can follow instructions well), to switch the drive? I know the firmware thing can casue a lot of issues.

And lastly, is there any chance that this problem could be coming from other part of the xbox other than the DVD drive? Is there any way I can find this out (I would hate to spend 50 dollars on a new drive when it doesn't solve the problem).
