I have a Motorola SB5101 cable modem, but I can't connect to xbox live it just says that it can't find an ip address, I checked xbox.com it had a list of compatible motorolas but mine was not listed. Is there a way to make a modem compatible i.e. downloads without replacing the modem.

you cn not make it compatible if it is not unless the company has a newer firmware for the modem that will help.

But there are other things you can try to get connected with that modem like:
Forwarding the ports needed for Xbox Live
Setting the console up with a static IP
Setting the PC up with a static IP
Making sure you using the correct type of ethernet cable (if wired)

Xbox.com has quite a few troubleshooting tips as well.
