Greetings, I've installed a WiiKey, and I have had no success. I'll detail everything, and hopefully someone will have an idea on what I should do next!
Wii: D2B no cut legs
Serial LU31416....
OS: 3.1U (updated via wireless)
Authentic WiiKey with Hologram.
1) I installed the Wiikey via short-short wire method. I've triple checked all contacts including which legs they connect to. There are no shorts across any of the wiikey pads.
2) I can run all purchased Wii Disks
3) Every burnt disk gives 'unable to read'
4) Using DVD-R Verbatim burns at 4x with ImgBurn 5) Tried the following burns:
* Wii config 1.3 (filechopped)
* Wii update 1.9b (filechopped)
* Wii update 1.9b with gcos (filechopped)
* Downloaded Wii iso (size = 4,699,979,776)
Every single burned file shows 'Unable to read the disk.' from the Wii menu disk loading channel.
I'm at a loss as to what to try next aside from trying to return the WiiKey. Any suggestions?
I'm talking to the guys I bought the chip from, and they're saying they have lots of problems due to the short-short wire install, and that I should undo the short short wire install and do a long wire install. Hrm... I'm not too optimistic, but I'll give it a shot.
Ok, it works perfectly now that I switched to the long wire install. There must have been a short somewhere I couldn't check (possibly the one pad underneath the WiiKey.
In un-doing the short-wire install, I pulled up the middle pad. - It's so easy to do, so be careful. I ended up soldering directly to the leg which turned out.
Sagadon,
This sounds like the exact same issue I'm having. My modchip installer used short wires because he couldn't get the solder high enough to reach the board. Do you think I should try the LONG wire install?

Yeah, long wire was 2-3 inches. Switching from the short wire to the long wire install made the modchip instantly start working perfectly. I'd recommend doing long wire from the start, or switching to it if a short wire isn't working!
