update wii or not - getting black screen on backups

Hi

I have my wii with version 2.1E firmware & a wiikey installed, I have tried a few backups and they work fine, however some newer ones don't seem to be loading. They show up on the menu screen, however when you select on the game in the menu screen it starts to load & then I get a black screen!!! I am considering updating my wii to the latest firmware, any ideas if this may fix the issue & also if I update my firmware do i need to run a wiikey update?????
