MAgicgate=unknown means the Mem stick is fake, I believe.

The fake ones tend to lose memory and sometimes take some time for your PSP to register that they are even there, some are OK though, I have 4 that are fine and 1 dodgy one

I'm pretty sure all my memory cards off ebay are fakes to be honest!

The only difference I've noticed is the write speeds when transferring stuff from my pc is a bit slow (considering it was meant to be a high speed card)

But it's no real problem for me if I end up paying less than half price and having to wait an extra minute or two.

that said, games run absolutely fine from the memory stick. so I reckon it's an okay deal overall, and you still can say to the seller on ebay that they're fake but say you want to keep it anyway. helps inform others before making their choices. As I know SD cards that are fake can sometimes not get recognized by more picky devices (my new JVC HD camcorder), luckily my PSP and my phone both aren't that picky!

Let's not forget what "Magic Gate" technology is all about. Digital Rights Management, those barstewards at Sony trying to stop you copying your own films etc. It's not some wonderful technology designed to improve our lives!

Thing is whenever people rant about DRM and how it's all so bad for us all (it is to be fair) that said, I hardly ever encounter it at all!

I mean I remember people saying how windows vista was going to be full of this scary thing called DRM and all my linux-advocate friends were warning me against it and saying it'll be terrible (and again, to be fair vista is terrible...just not for that reason) I have found no limit or restriction in vista that wasn't in XP. But then again I used things like AnyDVD so it was never really an issue. And whilst i'm on a more shady subject, my PS2s memory card claims to have magicgate (unlike my ms pro duos) it still works fine with my modde dps2, and i'm able to save backed up games savefiles and mor eimportantly my scummvm savefiles, files which would otherwise never be on a playstations memory card.

The only place I am subjected to DRM is Apple, namely iTunes (how ironic, apple having something that windows users DON'T want! haha) But the thing with that is not much of a problem personally as I don't tend to do anything with iTunes which would be restricted by DRM. Sure i've bought a couple of songs here and there but i don't mind burning them on to a cd once. once it's on my ipod it's forgotten really.

So, that's my rant over with, sorry for going off topic a bit :) I'm now in the market for a cheap microsd card since my phone takes them as well as M2 cards and they're cheaper!

man i dont even see a different in witing games to my psp,

a 2gb game takes about 20 mins, a 400 meg used to take fuckin ages (on my magic gate supported 512mb card) this fuckin computer or the XP activation code screwed it or on of the windows updates, for copying

oh ya whats the difference between genuine and origional mem stick

nothing by the looks of it, genuine cards just cost more! :)

Yeah I'm highly suspect of windows for limiting all my USB devices to be honest. I only just installed some new mobo/chipset drivers and it's no better. But then again I'm going to try set my machine to dual boot xp and vista as I've had enough of vista now.

Just too darn slow and my sound card is notorious for corruptions with creative and nvidia passing the buck between each other on who's to blame....frickin' idiots.

If I manage to get xp working again I'll let y'all know if I get better speeds, failing that my card is just a fake with slow write speeds.

20 minutes is a bit extreme, If i've had to move something that big (ISO or MP4 etc) it may take ten minutes at most, but then again I normally start these things off and go get a drink or do something else :)

I was wondering if anyone could test something for me, if you're getting slow write speeds and have an actual memory stick card reader in the computer, is this any quicker using a card reader rather than the psp itself? I noticed my sony mobile is doing the same sort of thing.

formatted my computer and put XP on instead..not too slow now with the psp plugged in to the usb port.

Still slower than you'd expect for "high speed" cards :)
