Help!

NTSC Wii (US)
3.1U Update
Official Wiikey Modchip

1. Installed Wiikey, tested and working with Mario Party 8
2. Updated Wiikey to 1.9g Beta (without 1.9b first)
3. Inserted SMG released by PROMiNENT
4. Ran full update, rebooted Wii
5. Backup games no longer work!

Any backup game I attempt to use (including Wiikey updates) are treated exactly as if the Wiikey was never installed. No duplicate channels.

Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Update: I ran the 1.9b Emergency Recover and re-upgraded to 1.9g Beta. All backups now work perfectly, including a Brickbreak version of SMG. =)

I updated both for the Wii and the Wiikey and my game gets the error "cannot read Wii disc. check Wii operations for help". this happens sometimes at the screen that shows you how to use your Wiimote or even in middle of the game at the first cut scene. Any ideas what that would be?

p.s. I tried to reburn the game at 2x and it still does the same. I'll try a different media and see what happens. Any other ideas please let me know.

That would mean it can't access the modchip's firmware. Check to see that all six points are well-soldered and secure. Good luck.

I can't be totally positive, but check to make sure your version of SMG isn't a Brickbreak. Download another copy, maybe PROMiNENT's, and burn and run it without any modifications. It sounds like the update is skipped when you put the game in, which is a sign that it's a Brickbreak version and the game won't run properly unless the update is installed. Good luck.

You can try downloading another image of the game and burning that - it's possible that part of the image file could be corrupt. If you know how, check the MD5 to make sure it matches the one of the torrent. Good luck.

ntsc wii
genuine wiikey
3.0U update

I have an original copy of SMG and backed it up.. Did the 1.9b -> 1.9g update. Don't if it's been posted already but one interesting observation I had is that after dumping, using brickblocker made a copy that was unrecognizable (e.g. black screen) whereas the non brickblocked copy worked great.

I have this same problem. I managed to get the game to work often enough to play it, but frequency of disc read errors is kind of disturbing. I own US Wii 3.1 Firmware 1.9g update, but this and alot of newer games get DRE's on verbatim discs burned between 2-4x. Any suggestions?

I'm having the same problem as you. Mine appears to be Semi- Bricked. When I put in SMG I get the Black Screen.

All other Back-ups work, its just that I can't get into the Wii Settings - I've tried the other wii channels and it doesn't work either, with means my Wifi has been affected too?

If anyone could help us Newbs it would be greatly appreciated.

*sigh* read how to protect wii from bricking, also the only way to unbrick is to get a new game that has a higher firmware than galaxy which is none at the moment, wait for a big wii game title, maybe fire emblem or something.

Can you describe exactly how you ran the emergency recovery disc? And did you burn it on +R or -R media? Thanks in advance.

So is there any way in the mean time to play SMG? I have:

1. US Wii - With Wiikey successfully upgraded to 1.9g
2. SMG - NTSC-JAP version

When I load the game all I get is the black screen

SMG is not region compatible with other region Wii's.

So if you have a...

US Wii -- Only the US version of SMG will work.

PAL Wii -- Only the PAL SMG will work.

So if you try playing a Japanese or PAL version of SMG on a US Wii you will get the black screen.

If you try playing a Japanese version or US version on a PAL Wii you will get the black screen.

I covered this in previous post so maybe you guys need to look through all the post and it would save you a bunch of headache trying to figure it out.

Thanks For the quick replies. This forum is awesome.

Just a thought, since I did the update with the JAP version of SMG, if I was able to obtain a NTSC-U version and pop it in, would it provide me with the update option?

Basically my question is does the Jap version run 3.0 and the US version run 3.1? If so would that be a sufficient enough update to 'unbrick' the wii?

I think in previous post in this thread and a few others some have said after semi-bricking their Wii with an imported copy of SMG that after running the SMG update of the correct region copy it unbricked their system settings. So all you can do is try.

That list is a compatibility list for region patcher's but you can also use that list for Modchips that have region free capabilities. If you had looked at my previous post on the previous page I linked to that very same site.

There is no region compatibility for IMPORTS of SMG. So the only way you can get it to play properly is by using a SMG region backup that is the same as your Wii.

Whats the big deal here? Just download the SMG of the region your Wii system is and then play it. All 3 region game backups are out there for download.

Why does it suck to be NTSC? PAL doesn't allow region patching either for SMG.

PAL cant convert the NTSC(U) or NTSC(J) just as NTSC(U) or NTSC(J) can't convert to PAL.

But it doesn't matter because all 3 regions are already out for SMG just download/buy and use the version that your Wii is.

I experienced the same problem. I did what you did by running the recovery disc and then updated back to 1.9g and i played galaxy for about an hour and a half. I just hope that when i turn my Wii on tomorrow it still lets me play.
