Ok guys here's what I have/had:
1. US wii console with wiikey installed (never updated)
2. 1.9g beta disc
3. SMG NTSC(JAP)
4. SMG NTSC (US)
Here's what I did:
1. Updated my Wii with the Game update from the NTSC Jap (Don't know what version?)
2. Updated the wiikey firmware (got the go ahead from homer)
3. This Semi-bricked my Wii, where the settings weren't working, but backups were
4. Mario would hang with a black screen
Here's how I fixed it:
1. Got the SMG NTSC (US) version.
2. Put it in, it read the disc and did ANOTHER system update
3. I played the game for 5 minutes and then a black screen came on...
And I won't ruin the rest of the game for you ;) ....
But I thought that was neat how the JAP version of SMG has an older version of the firmware?, so incase any of you are 'semi-bricked' it may help. I now have the 3.00U Firmware installd. Yes NOT 3.1
Anyways hope this is useful for somebody.R

Hello guys
I've got my SMG to work here is what i did
1. already owning a Wii pal console with 3.0E firmware
and no firmware updates to my wiik#y.
2. first i downloaded from wiikey.cn the 1.9b update
and the 1.9g update file from the resources area
3. i then used the filechop instructions from the 1.9b readme archive
to patch the Pal versions of the wiikey firmware updates
4. i applied the 1.9B update no problems using the reset key since
i don't have a GC controller
5.i tested a backup and a orig...ok
6.i applied the 1.9G SMG firmware fix (i read some where and i forgot where you need to have 1.9b FW before you apply the 1.9g firmware)
o i remember
http://www.ozmodchipsfaq.com/wiki/index....ario_Galaxy_Fix
so i did the 1.9g FW no probs.
7.i tested a backup and a orig...ok
8.i then connected wireless to the internet and updated my Wii fw from
3.0E to 3.1E
9.i then tried the original SMG and for some reason it did not recognize the disc, i then tried the backup and the display pic never came on but after clicking on the gamedisc area the small system update initialized, so i though yeah this is good, i hit ok and it updated fine, the wii system reset, and i tried loading the game (backup) and it went to a black screen with an error. Ok now i though f@ck, i think atleast the orig will work, so i tried that and it worked, then i went back to the wii menu ( not reset) and insert the backup, and for some strange reason after running the update from the backup, and then running the orig allowed me to play the SMG back up and all other backups. so thats my story hope this helps some Pal users. i will post i video hopefully of this silly encounter soon.

Quote: I updated both for the Wii and the Wiikey and my game gets the error "cannot read Wii disc. check Wii operations for help". this happens sometimes at the screen that shows you how to use your Wiimote or even in middle of the game at the first cut scene. Any ideas what that would be?
p.s. I tried to reburn the game at 2x and it still does the same. I'll try a different media and see what happens. Any other ideas please let me know.
Ok, so finally after trying 3 different types of media I finally got my game to work perfectly. Like someone mentioned before it is MEDIA with this game. I am convinced of it. The 3 types I tried were 1. Memorex 2. Nexxtec 3. Sony - which was the winning media. I burned at 2x speed and the game plays perfectly. Thanks for all the replies

Over the last 2 weeks I've read this thread and followed up on additional posts and to be honest, I'm just plain scared to even try anything with Super Mario Galaxy. That said, of course I'm tempted.
Am am somewhat confused because there is a lot of infomation in this thread on different methods and things you must do to have success. Can I clarify my understanding on two things?
(1) It's not just an issue with playing a backed up SMG. . . even the original SMG disc won't play because it somehow recognizes the mod chip?
(2) A few weeks ago about 8 back up discs stopped being recognized by the Wii. All other backups still play. I thought those 8 discs were useless but I've seen some posters mention running an emergency disc that fixes this problem. I thought I also saw something about waiting for a newer released game that would do an update and the games that stopped playing may start again. Is it possible to get these 8 games to start playing again (really the only two I really care about is Super Mario Charges and FIFA 2008).
I'll keep reading the thread regarding SMG, but I'm scared to even touch that game because I'd prefer that all my backup discs work and wouldn't want that to change for the sake of experimenting with SMG.
Thanks.

1. When I update WiiKey to 1.9g, do I need to be connected to the internet?
(I get Error: Test Failed! Check your connections and try again)
2. Will connecting to the Internet cause any problem with my modded Wii?

This has nothing to do with the Internet; it means it cannot access the modchip's firmware and overwrite it. Make sure you have a valid, genuine Wiikey, and check to make sure each solder point is secure and nothing is bridged.

Super Mario Galaxy requires you to update your Wii in order to play the game, unfortunately. If you can find a Japanese disc image of the game online, then you're all set.
There is a tool to remove these updates from games, but it cannot successfully be used on Super Mario Galaxy because the game will not work without updating. The tool is called Brickbreaker, and it's gotten hard to find, but Google is your friend. It's useful if a game tries to update your Wii but you've already updated it to what your console needs, so you can patch the disc image with the Brickbreaker and play the game. In this case, however, you can't use it.

If you have a Japanese Wii then you might not want to risk an NTSC version of SMG without reading up on some success stories first. It is possible that if your Wii is set to English, an NTSC-J SMG will detect this and also play in English. It's worth a shot.

EYE YAI YAI...
for NTSC USA:
First off let me say my god, that sticky is way too confusing and way too much crap in there for anyone to read. 300 and something posts all referring to ntsc, pal, japan and so on. There should have been separate stickies for each region of consoles, would have been way easier for folks.
ANyways, heres what i did which worked no problems.
1) Prominents SMG usa - load this (dont brickblock patch it if its usa) just use brickblocker to read the info and it should say its already usa. Load this disc and let it update. You have to select it from the wii channels and then accept the updates.
2)load 1.9g update disc. Use game cube controller to select A when it asks you to. First it will run through a test, then will come up with red writing saying its updating.
3) once this is done, load the SMG disc again and you WILL be good to go.
my god, I was soo nervous reading a million retarded scattered posts when all i really needed was this info (which i just wrote for you guys).
let me know if there are any questions. Have fun!

Are you serious?
You complain about the past post being retarded. Well your's is just as retarded since you add nothing new to this thread.
Those steps have been explained time and time again on this thread. So don't go acting like your someones HERO and saved the day for all.
All you did was repeat what others have already posted previously before you.

Its true, but at least its on the last page again, because that's the first place that all the lazy readers are gonna look first....
I agree with him though, perhaps some organization of each region's console's/games and even version numbers would help instead of one LONG thread. But still, like ANY other forum/thread the most important thing to do is READ READ READ!

Yes there IS an NTSC-Jap version of SMG out there, it was the first one I used. I however had a US-Wii so it was no good on my system. However it may work for your system.
Remember - you MUST use the region of SMG that corresponds to your Region of Wii. i.e. if you have a US-Wii use an NTSC-US copy. If you have a Jap wii, use a NTSC-Jap version

The region thing - yeah might be a good idea. Maybe we'll do that for the next 'big' one.
The only problem I see is they get convoluted with the different regions and end up the same when some people don't read. Has happened in other forums but maybe the Wii will be different :)

Why have different threads for different regions of SMG? The same steps need to be performed for all 3 region versions.
There will always be those that ask stupid question and the best thing to do when you come across 1 is just ignore it.
Maybe you could have stated your opinion in a different way SDMFer. It just seemed to me like you where saying all previous post where retarded and didn't offer the same information as what you gave.
Yeah there are some that are lazy but having an attitude and stating that its a good thing to have the steps repeated at the end for those that are lazy is just stupid within itself.
Make members read and find their answer. Giving it to them like stated above is doing nothing but enabling them to be lazy and not change their ways.

I dont know about you, but i dont really have time to read 500 posts to find a simple answer. And the search function is not always easy.
Sure the steps may be the same, but alot of the postings i see is people asking how to get a NTSC game to work on a pal system and so on ans so on.

I COMPLETELY agree with you. I've read every post in this thread over the last 2 weeks and is is confusing to the point that I've been scared to even PURCHASE SMG. It's to the point that I'm skeptical your steps even work because it can't be that simple for and NTSC since all the other posts make it some damn confusing when read together. Sure, I'm sure several posts describe the appropriate method to use, but when read along with all the other post, you don't know what to try. The thread had gotten to the point that reading from the start is the worst thing you can do.
And as far as the people that (1) act like the answer is right there in 17 pages of posts and easy to find, or (2) act like everyone has the same level of understanding and experience backing up games. . . you all are much less of an hero than this guy. At least he's trying to be helpful and simply stating the obvious that this thread IS confusing.
This is certainly not a forum I can help with my expertise, but when I'm in my hometheater forum, fishing forum, family law legal advice formu, I certainly contribute my part and more. Every forum has lazy people who don't do accurate searches, but it is part of the deal with forums. And, when a thread is this long and this confusing and deals with trying to avoid bricking a fairly expensive purchase, a little patient, clarification and understanding is just common sense.
Thanks SDMFer, I think you are right on the money and appreciate your post just noting the obvious. Unfortnately, the 17 page thread has me so confused I'll likely not even try you method.

thank you sir! Its nice to have you on my side with this. As I said, i was scared too because I didnt wanna screw my system up. However, the steps I used worked like a charm. If you also have an NTSC-USA and using the same version of SMG i did, im 99.999% confident it will work for ya.
The points you mentioned is right on the money. I too am part of a hometheater forum, and i find it much more professional.
If you do decide to proceed, let me know how it turns out, hopefully you have no issues like i did.

Hey there, I can only help for sure if you have a USA SMG game and a USA wii. SO if this is the case (same as me) just leave it at 1.9g as long as your sure you have it. Put the game in your wii and let it update, then you should be good to go. If for some reason you get an E001 error it means that your not at 1.9g. So update (flash wiikey) again.
Try that and let me know if you have any other questions.
