Windows update page not working on my laptop

I have a problem with windows update, despite using ie6 or ie7, i get the same result, when the search results with available updates show up, if I change the page to the "software, optional" section. Another update page opens where the list should be, and this cascading effect goes on, and I cant select any updates, because pressing anything on the left hand menu, opens another screen.

you can download the updates as an ISO file, burn to disk and run them that way.
