streaming video issues

I'm not sure if this is a vista, internet explorer, media player or driver problem. For the first few months after installing vista I was able to click on a video file posted on the news groups and a new tab would open in IE, then windows media player would open, it would buffer then start playing for most files. Now I get an error message stating IE can't display the web page. Under additional information I have the following;
This problem can be caused by a variety of issues, including:
Internet connectivity has been lost.
The website is temporarily unavailable.
The Domain Name Server (DNS) is not reachable.
The Domain Name Server (DNS) does not have a listing for the website's domain.
If this is an HTTPS (secure) address, click Tools, click Internet Options, click Advanced, and check to be sure the SSL and TLS protocols are enabled under the security section.
I have tried using firefox but it just wants to download the file even when I try and switch the default to open via media player. My apologizes for having such a vague request but I have no idea what is causing the problem.

give me the link of the video's your trying to view, if it's inappropriate send it a message to me with it message,
I doubt it's a codec issue since windows media player popped up, this means that file type has been set to default on the settings of WMP, it's probably the sites problem since the buffer starts but doesn't continue, uninstall then reinstall windows media player, make sure you don't have any security settings activated to blocked windows media player from accessing the internet.
if it ends up being a codec issue then lets update codec's

regarding the sites that you linked me to they have a very slow streamer, if you hit the download button on the site, your media players should launch, just be patient, you may need to go into the setting options and make sure everything is set to default.
after seeing the site i can say
1) update windows media player to latest version and do not change any settings
2) make sure you running it on fast enough internet connect, it was going slow and am running 104MBPS
3)if it's not running at all its a codec problem

4) in an unlikely event that your graphic driver/card doesn't support streaming witch i doubt (youtube) you may need to update, but probably
other wise just be patient
