I'll start from the beginning. About 6 months ago my 360 started freezing up on me, it was purchased a month after release so the warranty had expired. So the fix I came up with was rather simple, I tore it down cleaned it out and put some arctic silver 5 on the heat sinks. That worked for about a month and then red ring of death. After that I scourged the net and found the nifty heat gun fix, which worked till the dawn of Halo 3. Almost the instant I put the glorious game in my console the ring had returned. Tried the heat gun thing again worked long enough for intro video and dead again. So I am in search of some gurus with the knowledge to tell me how to fix this thing cuz my right trigger finger is quite itchy indeed.

Thanks to all in advance.

My xbox actually craped out on me yesterday. I got the ring of death also, but got 4 instead of the 3 red lights like the last time I got the ROD. My segestion to you and what I plan on doing is going to target open the xbox 360 I bought and swap out the inside. Put the new case on the old broken xbox 360 and take it back so you will have the old case w/the old serial #, but the inside will be new so no problems. It should work just fine because you will have your receipt. I had bought an 360 back about a month ago when I was looking to mod it and when I open the 360 it had a drive that cant be modded yet. Then I took it back and said I wanted the Halo edition so paid the differance and got that one, but still didnt have the right drive so I took that one back w/the receipt and they game me my money back. All I said is that it wont read disk. Dont worry if its modded. The stores cant detect that, but watch how you open it so they wont see no marks like you had opened it.

Obviously, if the problem started way before the release of a specific game, then it wasn't a game which killed your 360. Everytime a big release comes out threads like this show up. We'll see "xxx kills 360's" or "what ever you do don't play xxx".

The simple fact is games don't kill consoles. It's nothing more than a bad hardware design. And good news for you. MS now has a 3 year warranty for the 3 red light errors. Send your console in and you'll get another one back which has better components to deal with the heat issues.

That's the best fix available.

I thought the 4 red lights meant that your video cable is unplugged?

people have sent back modded consoles and had them repaired under warranty so i am not really sure they even check. Plus most of the time they are sending you a different refurbished console anyway and not the one you sent them.

I just went ahead and called it in. Hope I get my sameone back, but if its a refurbished hope its has a drive thats flashable (beng, not the 79)since I know they are the newest ones out there.

Chances are pretty good that you'll get a different 360. It seems the refurbs are all coming back with new Benq's.

But anyhow, as all drives are now flashable, you should be ok. Atleast you'll get the new heatsinks, so hopefully that'll help against future failures.

It's a combo of bad machine design and the fact that certain games are designed to push the console to its limits. I can play any other game and it will run for about an hour then freeze, Halo 3 its done at the end of the intro vid.

Now I checked again and the problem is diferent now I no longer get a red ring. With Halo either while its booting or right after the intro it says disk unreadable and boots me out. With any other game the screen pixelates and freezes after 30 mins to an hour.

Now before anyone reminds me to try the microsoft/warranty route. I already tried it they told me where to shove it Sooooo my options consist of fix this or buy a new box.

Why did they tell you that? Did you tell them you removed the warranty sticker?

No but the sticker has been removed I would figure any tech worth their weight in broken parts would be able to figure that out. I really don't want to wait out the 4 week turnaround for them to tell me that.

My advice then would do the store return. They dont take off the face place to see if the seal was broken.(well at least they didnt when I returned 2 xbox 360). Or you can always find someone that fixes xbox 360 and pay for that.
