New to this larky and I was about to ask the same question.

So using the 3.71 Easy installer is out of the question.

Flashing firmware always makes my heart skip a bit and I want to make sure I have all the right info before doing so.

Thanks.

You will need to go from 3.40 OE-A to 3.52 M33-4 then to 3.71 M33 then to 3.71 M33-2.

If you want to use this method go HERE and update to 3.52 M33-4 first then go HERE and update to 3.71 M33/2 custom firmware (You must update to 3.52 M33-4 before manually updating to 3.71 M33).

If you want the safest and quickest way then go HERE and create a Pandora battery with Dark_AleX's Unbricker V3 Magic memory stick which will update straight to 3.71 M33-2 custom firmware (your PSP doesn't need to be bricked to use this method).

If you have a problem upgrading either to 3.52 of 3.71 then it may be due to having the config.se file on your memory card. Use these steps to delete it and you should have no problem.

1. connect the psp to your pc/laptop via the usb cable.
2. enter the recovery mode on the psp.
3. enter advanced.
4. select "Toggle USB (flash1)".
5. on your pc/laptop, open "my computer" and open the psp's mem card.
6. look in the folders for the file "config.se", then delete it.
7. on the psp, select back, then exit.

larrylje

Thanks for the guides, worked a treat.

I did get worried with the 3.52 update, took an awful long time and my finger was itchy for the reset button. Thankfully I waited.

Cheers again.

hmmm now where's the m33-3 update?? (goes looking)

So how exactly is it safer not to just go to 3.xx then to 3.71? Is it just the fact you have to flash more? because I don't wanna make the pandora battery thing or w/e but I suppose I could if it's really that much safer. Wouldn't recovery mode on 3.40 oe work if you bricked it neways?

It is safer because the Pandora Battery and Magic Memory Stick are intended to unbrick PSP's. But they can also be used to downgrade/upgrade firmware. So it would be kinda hard to brick the PSP when your using an unbricker instead of doing it manually.

If you do it manually and brick your PSP during an update more then likely it will be a full brick that recovery menu is not accessible. Then you will need to create a Pandora battery and Magic Memory Stick anyway. This can be a challenge if you don't have a backup custom firmware PSP.

You can change the Battery back to normal if you backup the EEPROM before converting it. Just follow the directions on how to do that and how to recover it back to normal after your done upgrading the PSP. It is all explained in the guide.
