I have a pretty limited knowledge when it comes to hardware so I'll do my best to provide as much info as possible. I was trying to burn a dvd a few days ago with my Sony DRU-540A DVD burner. It had always worked in the past without issue. However, it said tracking or focus error in nero. I tried with two different brands of DVD-Rs, nothing. So I tried installing the latest firmware, which was already installed according to the drive. Still got the same error so I just gave up. However, I'm trying it again today, and I open up DVD shrink, hit open disc, and it says select drive. But there's no drive on the drop-down menu. I looked in my computer, no CD drive! The drive still opens and closes, and looking through the clear side of the case, nothing is disconnected. Could anybody offer some help?

Hi, it seems as to you may have accidentally killed off the drivers for the drive. Try to use system restore to restore your computer to an earlier time before all the calamity took place(I hope u r using Xp)

Thanks, but I set system to restore to well before this all started and it was no help. I tried using device manager to restore and roll back the drivers, neither worked.

And I'm using Nero 7

Well the problem really isn't with just Nero, because the drive isn't even showing up on My Computer, and the device manager says there's a problem with it. I do have the nero log if you think it could help point to the problem with the drive.

A nero log may or may not give an answer to the problem, but we won't know unless you post it.

http://my.afterdawn.com/locoeng/blog_entry.cfm/385

In the mean time, have you checked all your connections to make sure they are seated properly? This is a fairly old drive (in computer years), may be time for a new one.

hmm, no drive? ok, uninstall the ide controllers for the drive and uninstall the drive aswell!

windows xp] my computer/right click on blank part of page/properties/hardware/device manager

look for IDE controllers and drives, maybe 2 links... uninstall both and REBOOT PC.

well there see if the setting is in PIO or DMA mode? on consecutive errors drives can go to PIO mode, not good... but i think its more than this.

Nothing here to see, move along folks.

I've tried re-installing the drive but not IDE controllers. So I've uninstalled the drive again, but under IDE controllers it just says Primary IDE Channel, Secondary IDE Channel, and SiS PCI IDE UDMA Controller, which do I uninstall?

Also, the problem with the drive listed on the device manager is "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device."

However, Device Manager says I have the latest drivers.

Finally, here is the nero log from last week when my drive wouldn't burn:

do you have installed nero INCD or any ROXIO software?
for example:
Easy Media Creator 9
WinOnCD 9
Easy Media Creator 8
Easy Media Creator 7.x
Easy CD & DVD Creator 6
Easy CD Creator 5
etc.....

uninstall both all if so!

then use ROXIO clean tool to get rid of left over registry
http://tools.roxio.com/support/tools/roxizap.exe

Is the SIS the main header? and primary / secondary are seen when clicking the + sign open? if so uninstall this

SiS PCI IDE UDMA Controller

after reboot (in primary and secondary look to see if DMA is enabled!!!)

Do you have any USB drives attached?

Nothing here to see, move along folks.

Yes I do. So, will uninstalling the SiS PCI IDE UDMA Controller hurt anything?

Also, I don't think I have any of those programs installed, because they're not on the list on Add or Remove programs. Is there another way to tell?

hi

just run the roxio tool then try your drive after a REBOOT of pc, see what happens

then uninstall the sis controler, - it will reload the driver on rebooting pc, should be fine.

check start menu under nero for INCD...

Nothing here to see, move along folks.

Okay, I'll try the roxio thing. And there's no INCD under start menu so I assume I don't have it. I'll post the results in a minute.

EDIT: Roxio zap got the drive to show up! I'm testing a DVD burn now

EDIT the second: Success! You are a god among men!
