Best movie format for burning ?

I am totally new the dvd burning and everything which goes with it, I don't know if I am posting this in the correct forum but here goes.
Which is the best movie format for burning to dvd ? I have seen avi, vsd, mpeg, divx and maybe a few more formats ... which is the best format to use ?

at what point are you startimg out?
from origianl dvd to dvd copy?
off the net file (tell me what is the file format) to dvd

No, it is not from original dvd to dvd. I have a couple of avi files to burn to dvd but they are quite dark and so I need to lighten them first with maybe virtual dub.
Could you tell me what is the best format to burn to dvd ? Is there a format which is less hassle than others ?
Sorry to sound so dumb but I am totally new to all of this.

You will have to convert the files you have in to Dvd compliant files, (VOB, IFO & BUPs) to be able to burn successfully to a blank Dvd. Dvd Flick might be your answer.

do you have a stand alone avi player? if not like mentioned they need to be converted to dvd files
yes virtualdubmod will brighten your avi's useing contrast/brighten filter

Hi Rotary,
No, I don't have a stand alone avi player ... just a normal dvd player which I use with my tv.
The film is not American Gangster (didn't know you could get it !) ... it's actually the classic film The Time Machine with Rod Taylor :)

ok, after you played with your avi files, then i would use convertxtodvd or a free route TFM
have you used v-dubmod before?
i would jion them if both avi are the same film part 1 and 2
have you done any burning before to dvdr?

Hi again Rotary ... I forgot to mention I have Nero with my dvd burner , will I still need to use another software to convert avi files to dvd files or does Nero do this too ?

I have messed around with Virtualdub, just to see the results of brightening the avi file, but I haven't atually burned anything at all yet !
The film I have is in one avi file ... am I making sense ? I feel so dumb about all of this *blush*
I haven't a clue about burning any kind of file actually, but I hope to be able to pick it up easily.

no problem at all, go as slow as you wish...
i was exactly where you are 3/4 years ago, not a clue! i stayed around got to know some stuff and now i pay it forward helping others as they helped me out.
ok, so you know abit about V-Dubmod, kool, and yes afetr you have messed with your avi, it will need to be converted to dvd files.
you can use a very good easy to work out program called ConvertXtoDVD but you need to pay for it. a free option is to use TFM The FilmMachine (i use both!)
convertx can do the whole conversion from avi to dvd and burn to dvdr! awesome
TFM can get you the same way...

things to note on dvdr media cheap ones/discs cause more problems than anything! buy good discs, check back here maybe before you buy, buy off the internet you get to know the ID DYE info inside the disc.
burn slow to start with i always burn at 4x

One more question ... I have a dvdrip file, can I use Nero to burn this or do I have to convert it as you instructed just like an avi file ?
If I don't need to convert and can use Nero, which format do i choose to burn - data or vcd or whatever ?

If you have a set of dvd compliant files - vobs, ifos & bups - then you can burn them as a Video-DVD in Nero Burning ROM.
Easy peasy.

Hi Ripper, how do I know if the files I have are dvd compliant files ?
One movie file say 'DVDrip' under the icon and two others I have say 'video clip' - help !

Is the "DVD Rip" a folder or a single file? If a dvd comliant file type, you will have at least one folder with a group of files in; .vobs, .ifos and .bups.
Video clip sounds like mpg or avi, which would need converting before burning as previously discussed.

The dvd rip file is a single file not in a folder at all.
The video clips must be avi or mpeg as you stated.
I have another question if I may ask you ... why are all the files I have downloaded so dark ? I am going to have to brighten them all :(

Check the settings of your media player and see if there is anything wrong. Also make sure your video codecs are up-to-date.
If they are pirate copies, it may just be a bad source video.

Hi Ripper,
My pc opens the dvd rip file with Windows Media Player.
I'll check the settings for brighteness in the player and also check I have the latest codecs.

If it opens with WMP, it isn't dvd compliant, so stick it in a converter and go from there.

Ok thanks Ripper. That's something handy to remember, if it opens in WMP it is not dvd compliant and so needs to be converted.
I have Nero with my burner and so will check to see what that does .. otherwise I'll use the software Rotary suggested.

I am using Virtuldub to brighten my movie file and it is gobbling up my hard drive space at the rate of knots !! I only had 6gb spare and it's already down to 2.18gb and the dubbing is only up to 5% !!
Am I doing something wrong ? Should I have selected a compression in options in Virtualdub ? I left it as uncompressed.

You need to select Direct stream copy - compression should be XVid MPEG-4.

I have managed to brighten the file and then choose the settings you said I should use, I then save as avi to my desktop and a copy of the supposed edited movie file is there ... but when I open it up it is the saem as the original - still dark.
What am I doing wrong ?!! I preview the movie whilst in dubbing mode and can see that it's ok to go ... so I must be doing something wrong in the saving process - please help !
