There seems to be a discrepency in a couple threads I found so can someone confirm the following (in regards to when you have a mod chip):

1) Is it safer/better NOT to connect the Wii to the internet?
2) Is it safer/better NOT to connect WiiConnect24? (I have that off right now)
3) Is it safer/better NOT to peform system updates when prompted to do so?

I guess my concern stems from the days of Direct TV sending kill packets through their signal to make modified satelite cards unusable. Just trying to understand whether Nintendo can and does do this?

I apologize, but I left one question out. I saw several people recommending that you actually unplug the Wii when not in use. They appeared to suggest this not because of any power surge or lighting concerns, but instead in order to prevent Nintendo from doing something to your Wii.

I guess this relates to some of the confusion I have which is why I posted the questions above.

Thanks!

1. No not really - you should be fine at this time.

3. It's safer to update your Wii from the internet but where a game prompts you to update you should only update using a game from your region. eg - if your Wii is NTSC USA then don't use a Japanese or European PAL disk to update and so on.

Thanks for the clarification.

Just curious about your last statement. . . I don't download the ISO so my backups are always from the games sold in the U.S. so fortunately that shouldn't be an issue. Were you saying it is better to do updates from the internet simply because Ninendo will always know what region you are in and send the correct updates?

Sounds like in my case, I'm fine either way I guess.

Yeah that's why it's safer - your machine doesn't care where the update comes from but Nintendo make sure you don't install the wrong one over the net.
