No, not Take Two Interactive, but Warhawk.

Months ago, we were able to replace files on the PS3 HDD using the Warhawk Beta PKG, and some interesting network trickery, by hijacking the update procedure. Within the past week, we came across some more update files, these were interesting.

They were "fake SELF's". Basically SELF's, without the encryption. These are used (and runnable) on DEV boxes, but not on retail machines.

Whats so good you might wonder?

This gives many people a real first peek at PS3 executables, as this is the first without any encryption all over it. Sure, some people have been privileged to have seen and used Development compiled stuff, but nothing that was an actual game.

Now, this file has a ton of information. Aside from the fun strings, there are system calls to the hypervisor many have ...

Really What does this mean... Does this mean we might be closer to making a backup technique ?

TBH, i hope that we dont have a hack in the ps3. even if we was to get a hack and play backups, we would most likely get banned from PSN and i couldnt go without online on the ps3.

They also have to get around the FAT32 thing that only lets you boot files under 4GB off the HDD.

Custom firmware will be the death of PS3...
Straight up...
It's slowly killed the PSP for me personally and Sony and game manufacturers aren't getting the credit they deserve for dropping us all great games...

Yeah and IMO there's no real use for CFW at the moment as unlike the PSP Sony allows you to run linux and other unofficial software on the PS3. So really the only use CFW has is for pirating games- something I'm not interested in...

So you guys dont mind paying big money for a mp3 player that plays games. I take it you spent a few hundred on all the games you own. You dont like playing retro games and doing all this on a small screen is okay. I think CFW actually boosted psp sales. I think it inspired sony to add more features to the psp. Im all for making anything I own work to its full potential.

Maybe I didn't make my self clear, I dont mind, actually I like having custom firmware on a PSP, but I don't believe that it would provide any use for the PS3- as you can run emulators to play retro games in Linux and do a whole lot more than in Sony's own OS without CFW. And no- I'm not an anti-homebrew sony fanboy, however I do dislike piracy.

No-one said they 'don't like CFW'...
It's just the amount of piracy that goes on afterwards is not right...
Especially for people who really appreciate gaming and buy games legit...
