do i need to update my pal wii with firmware 3.? before installing my wiikey if so how would i go about it?,as i have tried everything else and i think this is my last option, if not is it possible that i have a defective chip (which i think is a clone anyway)???????.

You don't need the latest Wii firmware. It'll work if it's installed correctly. I did the short wire method, and all I got was 'unable to read disc'. I switched to a long wire install, and it worked perfectly. I was suspicious of the WiiKey too, but something wasn't right on the short wire install - and I checked for shorts, and the pin connections. I figure a pad underneath the WiiKey got shorted accidentally.

Btw: do your updates online via wireless router. 3.1 is the latest confirmed update that has no effects on mods.

yeh i thought i might of had a short aswel so i moved the chip away from the board and placed it under the gc controller sockets, similar to the wlip method but still no joy, i think my only option now is to purchase a genuine wiikey and see were we go from there.

I have a few questions regarding WiiKey update.
I have never updated my WiiKey or even used any boot disc.
I have a NTSC-WII console updated to 3.0U.
I only play games that are NTSC.
I have burned games and they have played perfectly fine with me just putting it in.

Why is it necessary to update the Wiikey to 1.9b?
Do I need to use the wiikey config disc?
Just want to make sure..is it safe to update to 3.1U through the internet with a NTSC console?
