TiVo to offer lifetime service plan for holidays

article published on 12 November, 2007

TiVo Inc. is to bring back its lifetime service plan for the crucial holiday season. Its customers pay a monthly service charge currently, which when combined with the cost of the cable service, can be a drawback and a reason to settle for DVR's provided by Cable companies. However, amid reports that cable providers will be making DVRs incapable of skipping commercials, interest in TiVo is growing again. ... [ read the full article ]

TiVo will be offering a lifetime plan for a fee of $399. The plan, with time, could save customers a decent amount of money.
W/ Time? As someone who does not own a TiVo device, does this mean I would have TiVo service for life if I make the "big" one-time purchase and set-up an account or is the "lifetime" plan tied to the TiVo unit I may purchase this holiday?

I have a tivo but I'm not willing to upgrade to a lifetime plan if it's locked to unit. Now if they would allow you to switch it say 2 times to a new unit if an old one breaks then i might consider it. Electronics devices don't last as long as they should now a days.

yes, and yes the account is tied to the TiVo unit. Every TiVo I have ever gotten since then TIVO offers me to switch my lifetime service to the new one which is nice. That doesn't mean they always will but i've never had a problem switching it over. I've had my lifetime sub for over 3 years now and it's saved me a ton and continues to save me lots of money with this new HD TiVo I got :)

It is indeed locked to the unit, and hard coded onto the motherboard. On the other hand, I've replaced the hard drive twice on my series 1 TIVO (about 7 years old)and it still works great. The lifetime subscription has saved me a lot of cash even with the cost of the new drives.

Don't believe this person! I, my mother, my sister have had Tivo for 7 years now and in fact, they DO NOT allow people to move their service from one unit to another. Read the terms of service, FAQs and everything other piece of info. Now, unless this guy scammed them, conned them or blatantly lied to them then he's full of sh*t!

Now this my friend is great info. How did you replace the drives?? I know there are services and software that take existing tivo OS and image to another drive but it's a special OS with special file systems. I am truly curious. THanks!
