why are my backups taking forever to load now?

all my backups usually load pretty fast now i pop the disc in and it takes forever. and when they do load im getting a disc unreadable message after the game loads. this all happened a few days ago when i put in assassins creed and it asked me to update. i updated and the update booted the system and restarted and it hasnt been the same ever since. i cleared the cache yesterday and the games were loading like normal and everything was going fine. now today same thing as before games are taking forever. what can be wrong? could it be the firmware or maybe my lens is dying?
