No actually it doesn't. It has ZERO backwards compatibility, that's one of the reasons it's cheaper. And I'm pretty sure you have to do the swap switch.. but it WONT work anyways because 40GB's don't have backwards compatibility.

"The 40 GB model has two USB ports instead of the four USB ports on other models, and does not include a multi memory card port, SACD support, or any backwards compatibility with PlayStation 2 titles."
now, im not saying your wrong, but im just showing you what i read. did they change the compatibility recently or something?
thanks for replying though! :)

I have a great solution... If you want to play PS1 (and PS2) back ups, buy yourself a moded PS2 and whola, you get all you wish for for 100$.

No, assuming that PS1 games do actually work on the 40Gb PS3, then you will need to install a swap switch to play them (guide: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/499497 ). IMO its not worth it to open up my new PS3 just to play PS1 games :D

The PS3 does play PSone games (not backup copies, the retail ones).
but you have to make sure that your PS3 is the same region and
format (NTSC or PAL).
Visit this page for the detailed compatibility details...
PS3 SPAM removed
It has all the details showing the compatibility with PS1 (and PS2 and DVD and Blu-ray discs as well).
