Guys I am on the virge of formatting my HDD like I indicated earlier. I over heared someone talking of repairing it instead, how does repairing of operating system work and what are it goodies????

If you have a way of backing up your important documents etc, I would do a clean install.
I did a repair installation of XP one time and it was less than satisfactory.

do u mean that there are no advantages behind repairing the OS. does the other files in the HDD get lost during repairing????

They shouldn't get lost.
I found that the random problems with the system were still there after the repair.
