Am i right in assuming that i do not need to do the 1.9g wiikey update to play this on a PAL console?

Also i was going to update my firmware via the internet earlier but i got a warning saying it may damage my console if i do it. Am i still ok to run the update or could it trash my wiikey? Only had it fitted for a couple of days so wouldn't be best pleased if it did.
