Not that I would use generic crap dvds but I'm curious if I will have issues playing backups depending on the media I end up using. I'm actually going to end up using Verbatim DataLifePlus DVD+R discs

ABSOLUTELY, if you find a dvd that works for backups then stick with them like religion. I had to try a few brands until i finally found one that works and believe it or not they were "generic crap" dvds.

as to "Should you care" Yes I know the wii can read most of the stuff you throw at it and if it works why just buy brand names right? well heres the prob when you buy a pack of DVD-R's look at the side of the DVD-R's do they look even all around or does it look like lightly inconsited mealting plastic and all weird? If so they are very cheap, with these Types of DVD-R's your wii is going to have to use more energy trying to read then the better quality DVD-R's and the more straint you put on the laser the quicker you will burn it out, I personally use TDK and Memorex, they dont sell verbatim where I live so never tried those but have never had any probs with the Memorex and only a couple with TDK's
