If I want to backup my games, I have to get a capable drive? No other ways?

A friend mentioned that there might be a way of doing this through the Wii itself. I ended up ordering a LG GDR-H10N earlier today which is works with backing discs up from what I understand

mmm good question I havent read or heard too much talk on linking the wii with the pc. What if a usb ethernet port what inserted into the wii's usb, then would you be able to ftp kinda like xboxs?

There is only 3 ways. 1. Get the proper drive in your computer. 2. Download the Isos 3. Use a modded wii and a sd dumper to dump the image of the games to SD cards.

Sounds like I did the right thing in buying a drive then. It would cost me more to buy a big enough card to fit the iso than what it cost me to get the drive

i think i know what you "may" be talking about.
I read somewhere that besides using an SD card to dump in sections to buy a usb Ethernet adapter and hook it up to the pc to save time on section dumps with a card. Now, what software you may need, i dont know about that.

Damn. Looks like the drive I got won't work with rawdump. I guess there are different versions of the model I got. Go figure. At least it's quieter and uses Sata :) Paid $20 more than I needed to though lol
So any more info on using sd cards or ethernet? I rather not spend $100 on a dvd drive especially after taking a loss on the drive I got

There are only 4 drives that will let you make backups of WII disks. They are no longer in production, so you either have to find an old one yourself (like in an old Dell computer), or buy one off of Ebay or something and hope you get one that works now and in the future.
The other method, if you are using a WiiKey, is their DVDDUMP. It will use the WII DVD drive to dump to an SD card which you then transfer to your PC to burn your backup. However, this either requires hard wiring in a "gecko" port on your WII (see sticky), or buying an SDGecko card adaptor.
I use the SDGecko adapter which is a whole lot cheaper if you already have an SD card then paying the market price on an old LG drive. However, I have not been able to use the SDGecko and DVDDUMP to backup GameCube games even though they claim it can. I've tried a few games now, and while it all shows it was successful, the WII will not play the DVD backup of the GameCube. Someone else, who had an LG drive, backed up a GameCube game using his LG drive, and that worked. So I suspect the algoright of DVDDUMP somehow is not correctly structuring the data for a GameCube disk. Whether they even fix that or not is anyone's guess.
So, if you want to back up both Wii and GC, then you might want to try to find an old LG drive. Otherwise, if you are happy backing up WII games, you can get an SDGecko adaptor (or wire your own) and use DVDDUMP if you are using a WiiKey.
