Hi all, just wondering if playing a 360 game in a resolution higher then what it was built as, can cause graphical occurances and such. Like if you play a game that says "780p" on the box in 1080i.
For example, when I play saints row, sometimes when turning the camera or just walking around, I see tears/rips on streets or generally anywhere on the screen. Sorta like the VSYNC ENABLED feature on alot of PC games works. (just to make it more clear what i'm seeing)
So is this just the way the game is, and isn't 100% seamless in the game engine, or is there a problem with my 360 and tv resolution? If it matters, i'm using a sony A2020 series.
Thanks for the insight!

Not really sure what causes that. My 360 is set for 1080i and that is what i play all my games on. And i have not had that problem. Mine is also running through the VGA cable rather than the component cables which may help me though.

maybe its just the response time of the tv, not all games run at the same frame rate and so games that run at say 30fps wont have any image tear because the tv can cope with it, but games that run at say 60fps then the tv cannot keep up with it. and i guess by running a game a a diff res to what it says on the box for instance if it says 720p and you run it at 1080i then perhaps the tv needs to scale the image causing it to respond slower and then cause image tear
im not sure, just guessing as this is a question ive wondered about in the past

I think you're on the right track Herod. I don't think it's the tv that much, but i'll mess around with it some more. (it's supposed to be 2.5 ms - 6.5ms) I guess the difference is what it's processing. I can watch HD tv channels in 720p and 1080i and they both look great. I haven't had time to test the difference with the 360 set to both differences and test.
I'm also wondering if I connected through the 360 HDMI cable, if that would change things. I don't have one though. My buddy has the same tv, previous year model and sees similar performance so I don't know if it's just this games graphic engine/load performance or not. I don't know anyone else with this game/different tv to test it on. :-P

Just as a clarification, the image/artifacting i'm getting is not "ghosting" or blurring, but more like rips/jaggies, or something similar. I'm not really feeling that it's something to do with my TV response time. I can't visually notice any delay with button presses, joystick movement and the time it takes to register with the TV. I'll try some other graphic intensive games to see how it works out. Anybody know another title that uses the same graphic engine as Saints Row?

I did some messing around with mine. The best picture quality is actually should be the 720 or 768 settings and if those do not look good on an HDTV then you have a problem.
I tested mine and have left it at at the 720 setting. But i can surely go higher without problems because i am running through a VGA cable and the TV is high end DLP 56".
this article may shed more light on it.

I switched my 360 over to 720p mode, and ran crackdown and noticed minor tearing/jaggies on buildings when turning the camera slowly. I'll try it with saints row to see if that recreates it. Everything else played fine and smooth without any other anomolies.
As a side note, on saints row, if I would press the "X" box logo on the controller and open up the dashboard in game, (where it pops in off the left side asking you about game/xbox live login and such) the actual animation of the dashboard would have alot of artifacts and jaggies on the very right edge of it as it scrolled in. Right before the text would fade in on the dashboard it would look all crappy. Didn't seem to notice this in Crackdown. Weird.:-/

That series of TV should not be having any graphical problem. Especially not at 720 or 768 resolutions. It should be able to handle either of those with ease. Mine can only do 1080i and it has no problems with either 720 or 768 setting os the Xbox.
Some other things to check would be to see if your TV has a "game mode" some do and it will help increase your picture quality with games. Also check the input that you have your 360 plugged into and make sure the screen format (16:9, 4:3 or whatever) is set correctly. I usually use 16:9(widescreen)

The tv is set to widescreen as well as the 360. What is this "768" setting your talking about? I've never seen that option, just 720p or 1080i. Is 768 for special monitors or something or just with the VGA cable? Are there any pro/cons to using the vga cable as opposed to the componant or HDMI cables? I figured if i'm going to pay for another set of cables, it might as well be HDMI.
There is a "game mode" setting, but it's not available with componant cable setting. I've also read that it actually is a setback rather than a boon when playing games. I don't see other issues playing games and stuff from xbox arcade and other games seem fine. I think it's maybe just hardware limitations on certain games, but I am curious to see what things would look like with the vga or hdmi cable and do a comparison.
Anybody try comparing the vga and componant and posting the results?

From my understanding "tearing" issues are usually linked to gpu problems i.e. possible sign of failing. Although it could be something to do with the vga cable?
