How does xbox 360 know that DVD is a copy?

Hi everyone:


I'm new to this forum and I'm fascinated by the discussion here.

It sounds like if someone attempts to make a copy of their XBOX 360 game, it will be rejected by the XBOX without a firmware fix. Right?

I'm curious, how exactly does the XBOX know that DVD is a copy if supposedly it is a 1-to-1 copy of the original?

Security sectors are stamped on the disc in the on the inner most ring when it's pressed on a commercial DVD press. DVD burners can not write to this area. The 360 drive looks for those security sectors and won't give the ok to boot the game without them. Hack firmware tells the drive to look for the security sectors in a different area of the disc. So it's not a 100% exact clone of the disc, because that's impossible without a DVD press. All the other info on the disc is is a 1:1 copy though.

Wow, so there's really no way to make a playable copy of 360 game without opening the console? I just bought mine a month ago and now I see lots of scratches on the halo 3 dvd. I desperately need to back it up but what is the point of doing it if I can't play it. I'd also lose the warranty if I open the console. What would you suggest?

It's up to you. I flashed my 360 as soon as I could over a year ago. I don't care about void the warranty on a console.

Thanks for the advice, Memnock. I'm considering to flash it as well. Just curious though, as the xbox pro, what would you do if it shows that red ring of death and you voided the warranty? I heard so many stories of them going bunkers.
