I have a modded 360. Had it since launch in Denmark. Its been working fine until yesterday when I for the first time unhooked my 360 and brought it to a friend's house. there it started making some weird and kinda loud noises, and it had problems booting back ups. It seemed like it was loading a lot slower when it finally did boot after a few restarts.

As stated, I get no ring of death. But the 360 is louder than normally, today it wont boot back ups at all, and it seems to have problems by booting up original games. I tried clearing the cache, which didnt do anything. Demos load up perfect.

Assassins creed back up will boot, but when it starts loading the game save, I get a message saying I need to clean my disc (I know for sure theres nothing wrong with the disc)

Does anyone know whats up? A friend of mine promised me to open it up on monday to see if anything got loose inside when I brought it to my friend's house. Plus I'll ask him to try putting on a new firmware if that doesnt help.

Do you think any of that could make my xbox work again? If not, do you have ANY solutions? Its a sad day for humanity

It sounds to me like a laser problem. 16 months seems to be a pretty average life expectancy.

yea, if it is a laser problem, which it sounds like it you can do a couple things. One would be opening it up, cleaning the laser. If that doesnt work, the laser could be going bad. I never did it on an xbox, but a temporary fix is the POT tweak. The next trick, which is easy... get a new drive. You can swap out your drive with a new one as long as you have your original firmware. Then you just flash the firmware on the new drive.... at least i think thats it... you may have to look that up. Also, what media do you use for your backup copies... im just curious

hehe my bad, dunno how I got media to burning program :) But I mainly use Verbatim, which I heard should be best. By I have a few samsung ones, which Ive always thought better of, and they actually do work after a few reboots now (unlike verbatim, which it cant even recognize now)

ummm could you tell where the "weird and kinda loud noises" were coming from as you stated in your first post

I'm not 100% sure at all, but it sounds like they come from the drive. Also, as far as I remember they got worse as the game loaded, which would probably also point to the drive..?

Is there no chance just a new firmware could fix this?

Get a new drive. I wouldn't even bother messing with the laser. Your drive is 2 years old and lasted as long as one could expect playing backups.

Hmm, so which new drive should I get? I have no clue at all what I'm doing here.. After getting a new and good drive, will I have to put new firmware on the xbox, or is getting a new drive the only thing I have to do? Thanks a lot in advance

im not sure which drive you should pick, maybe just pick the same drive you have. You can look up tutorials on how to do it im sure, but i never had to do it so i dont know. You need to make sure you have your original firmware from your bad drive or it wont work. At least im pretty sure. When i get some time, ill try and look something up, but you can do the same.

Really you can get any flashable drive, because you can just spoof it to firmware to be whatever your current drive is. You just need to get the DVD from your current drive.

Didn't get that dvd part either. Did he mean firmware?

Also, if I don't have my orignial firmware (well, this guy I know has it, but he wont be home until next week), will I then be able to use my friend's original firmware on my new drive - and after that, can I put on one of those Xtreme firmwares and be back in business?

Thanks for your answers everyone. I know this guy who wants to buy my 360 for cheap so he can mess around with it, so I think I'll do that and buy a new one with HDMI in it.. So I'm getting a new firmware as well, and I might get one of those stealth ones.. I hear they only read games that's stealth patched, so I was wondering how often the new games you "get" are already stealth patched?

dont sell your 360 too cheap.. its an easy fix... how much were you selling it to him?... about the stealth stuff, I dunno where you get your games but usually they have them stealth patched already(if you dl) and it doesnt matter what xbox you use. Newer firmware will only read stealth patched games, thats all amd older firmware would read either.

hehe I wasnt sure if I was allowed to mention dl games in here :) but yeah, that's what I'm talking about.. Anyway, I'm getting almost 300 dollars for it, but a new one will cost nearly 600 here..

yeah thats what my friend told me.. But I was just thinking that the Xbox itself is getting old, so might as well try a new one... Or is the drive the only thing that gets "old and worn out"?

Well, the choice is yours. If the drive has been the only thing bothering you, i would just fix that. But if you want a newer xbox with the hdmi and anything else, then thats your choice. If it were me, im cheap and i would replace the drive... haha.
