I'm looking at buying an HDTV probably during black friday this year, and have found one from walmart that i'm wondering if it will be up to the task of being a good set for playing games on.

Looks good to me. I got a Hitachi 60 in LCD projection and games look amazing!

i know some people say look at refresh, contrast and brightness, but wtf does that stuff mean anyway? is it really important?

I think a sony bravia would be a better choice due to quality. Sony bravias are probably the best lcd hdtv's avaialable. if your not on a tight budget, go for a sony 40" kdl-40s3000 720p lcd that i got for 1300, GoW looks sick on it.

i'm on a tight budget, i've been putting of getting an HDTV now for about 2years atleast (Since launch) but i'm trying to stay under $800 or so and get a 42" or better. So my options are kind of limited i know, but i don't want to buy another 37" TV ( i don't like not size jumping, don't see a point in buying something the same size as i have now...)
i'm just wondering if spec wise this is a good TV, the name and customer service i'm not worried about hell, i've got an Xbox (4times replaced) so dealing w/ CS is like a 2nd nature now, and lets face it, the help line for M$ isn't that great....
hopefully someone here really know's there tv's and all those specs i listed and stuff, as i'm not sure about that stuff....and i'm not buying Sony cuz lets face it, ur paying for name, that's all (especially in a DLP set since all DLP tech is from Texas Instruments) but that's a whole different thing, so back on topic....
can anyone provide me w/ some specs that i should be looking for if these aren't up to par w/ running a 360, i don't need worlds greatest or anything, just something that looks alot better then my Sony 37" CRT Set. I also figured since this is 1080p that's a good thing, right?

That TV should do you just fine. I suggest you get the 360 VGA cable and hook up using that rather than the stock component cables.
Set the Xbox to run at either 720 or 768 and the picture on your games should be great.
The greater the contrast ratio the better your picture will be. Like the one you listed is 800:1
The Samsung DLP TV i bought was 10,000:1
so you would be able to tell the difference.

PS-good luck getting anywhere near a decent HDTV on Black Friday. Hope you plan on camping out Thursday night.

i have to drop the wife off at work @ 2:30am, so getting in line isn't an issue, but since the TV is available online for that price i will get it from online just like i did w/ my computer last year :-)

also says it is being discontinued and availability is limited.
another thing i would be a little concerned about is that out of 4 people who bought it it only received a 1 star rating. You really may want to look for one with a better customer rating.

well that kind of blows because when i first followed the link and everything it was still available online, guess they changed there mind and updated the site to get ready for blackfriday, looks like i'll keep on waiting then until i find a good 42" HDTV for under a grand.......thanks stiemy, oh and is there a particular set of specs i should be looking for when planning on buying a new 'set'? like Refresh rate and brightness and contrast ratio and all that, or does that not really make a huge difference for casual but good looking gaming??

ended up waiting in line, it was short enough, got the TV so far so good, hey...exactly how much of a difference will i notice using HDMI versus Component ? (even though it's 1080p either way)

Well, I have HEARD that the HDMi is still going to be a bit cleaner. I do not know for sure.. however there is one thing to remember. HDMI is a digital connection, whereas component and VGA are analog... which means there may be signal loss in the conversions, whereas in HDMI, you either get the picture or you dont.. there is no in between. You can grab HDMI cables cheap, so if your 360 has HDMI, I dont know why you wouldnt go for it.

you heard correct, HDMI is going to be a little crisper due to the fact that it is the most high end audio/video connection right now. As far as most common people being able to tell the difference i would say that most would not be able to see much between VGA and HDMI. The main difference is that VGA and Component cable are still an analog signal, Where as HDMI is an all digital signal.
Se the picture quality and difference you will see doesn't only depend on the cable, it also depends on the TV set as well. So unless it is REALLY high end you will not see a huge difference. You may see a slightly crisper picture or slightly more vibrant colors but it will most likely be minimal on the set you listed above.
But my advice would be that if you have the ability to use HDMI with your 360, and have the cable or can afford to buy a decent one, why not use the best that you can get. It may not be a huge improvement but it will surely be the best it is going to get. Also most games seem to look better when using a lower resolution like 720 or 768 then they will at 1080i or 1080P because most are not really made to output at that high of a resolution.

hmmm okay, and crap i forgot my xbox doesn't have the hdmi port on it (stupid refurbs from M$, maybe the next refurb will have it....) i know that most games list 1080i as the highest def available, some do have 1080p on the back (bulletwitch comes to mind) so far i'm happy with the set it looks pretty damn nice imo, specially for $800....i will have to try toying around w/ which resolution looks best though, and now i got to order a damn HD box from my cable company, oh well.....it's still i nice step up from what i had, even if it isn't the best...and atleast i can boast the 1080p. :-)

Yeah, if you get the HDTV service it is nice. Now on that you will notice quite a difference in the regular and HD channels. I have HS Satalite service and have quite a few channels in both HD and regular def and when you see them side by side showing the same program you can really tell how much better it is. Although the last i checked digital cable was an upscaled picture and not TRUELY digital like satalite is.
