8x is the max the disc can spin without screwing up writing to the disc....you want to burn @ 2.4 to ensure that your info is cleanly put on the backup.

I burn my 360 games at 4x. Everything works fine for me at that speed. Things can get funky when I take it any fast.

I burn everything at max speed 16x for single layer stuff no matter what it is and 8x for dual layer stuff as well. But I trust my system and hardware.
